社会的弱者の視点に立った法学入門です。
主な内容は学問としての法律学の特質、
成文法と不文法、裁判全般、権利についてといったところです。

本書の長所は何よりも、
著者の視野が広いこと、そして文章が読みやすいことだと思います。
これらの要件を満たす法学入門書はいまだに少ないでしょう。

ただ、注意点としては、
まず、本書(1986年初版)が立法や判例の点で古びてきていること、
次に、全般的にマルクス主義の影響が見られることだと思います。

第一の点はいたし方ないですが、
逆に、ひととおり法律学を修められた方は、
自分なりに近年の法をめぐる進歩あるいは退歩！？を補充する楽しみがあり、
著者の提言や予言の精度（かなり当たっている気がします）を確認することも可能です。

第二の点は、正直詳しくないので外れていたら著者には申し訳ないですが、
読む人によっては不快・不公平に感じるのかもしれません。
もっとも著者の記述は概ね公平であると私は感じましたし、
冒頭に掲げたように、
あくまで社会的弱者の正義の実現を目指すとのことならば、
傾聴に値する部分も多いと思います。

本書を読めば、単なる法律学の知識の基礎だけではなく、その理念や歴史的背景についてまでも知ることができます。ただ、あまりにも裁判の項にページ数を割きすぎなのでは、という感は否めません。筆者は、前著「法は何か」が偏っていると批判されているらしいということを冒頭で述べていて、ある程度の注意は払っているので、その誤解を解こうとする意図があってのことなのでしょうか？？いずれにせよ、本書はとても分かりやすく、ちょっと頭が良くなった気分にさせてくれるので、是非一読をお勧めします☆
