本書は、体系的な文法の記述ではなく、著者が大切だと
考えたことなどが自由に語られています。

9章と付録から成るこの本は、通時的な研究に基づき
現代の日本語の文法について述べられています。
例えば、日本語の助詞の意味をただ記すのではなく、
なぜそのような意味になるのかということを
奈良・平安時代にまで遡り明らかにしています。

また、ドイツ語・英語・マレー語・朝鮮語などの
外国語と比較し、日本語の特徴を浮き彫りにさせています。

個人的に特に面白かったのは、200年後の動詞の
活用形を予測したり、「グロッキーだ」や「ラッキーな」
というような形容語の増やし方について述べてあるところ。
非常に興味深い書だと思います。

なぜ「係り結びの法則」があるかを知ることができたのは大きな収穫であった．
この本では，他にも，高校の古文で丸暗記した古文文法に，
日本語の変遷から合理的な説明を加えている．
こういう説明をしてくれたら，古文が好きになっていたかもしれない

近年，同じ著者になる「日本語練習帳」がベストセラーになったが，

こちらの方が専門的・学術的である．
付録としてある「動詞活用形の起源」は，特に国語学の論文でも読んでいる感じである．
本格的なものを求めている人には満足できる内容だろう．

日本語の古典文法は世界にも類を見ない例外の全く見出せない文法体系なのだそうである。それに比べて、今の私たちが使っている現代日本語は、カタカナ語の氾濫は措くとしても文法も極めていい加減な使い方をしている。「が」と「は」の使い分けも気にしない。古典文法では「き」「ぬ」「つ」「む」「らむ」など、フランス語やロシア語ばりの時制や体の使い分けが存在したのに、現代日本語では「過去」と「完了」の区別が出来ず、未来形は消滅している。とにかく平安期から使われていた古典文法は、信じられないほど精緻な体系だったのである。文法が単純・曖昧になったのは幸福だろうか、不幸だろうか。大野博士の文法の各側面、時代変遷に対する精密な観察を目の当たりにして、妙な感慨を感じた。
