復刊本(第55刷)を読み始めるとドンドン引き込まれて数晩で読了しました。「大学の教養時代に読んでおけば数学特有の思考回路がすんなり理解できたのに！」と思った程、優れモノです。カントール集合論から群論、位相空間、トポロジー、非ユークリッド空間へと自然に読者を導きます。
本書は物理数学の考え方の肝が分かる本でもあります。例えば大学の数学では色んな空間とその中の『点』と『距離』の概念が出てくる訳で、量子力学を記述するヒルベルト空間では関数が『点』と認識されます。そこで「何故、関数が『点』なんだ？それに関数と関数の間の『距離』って何？」と最初は戸惑う訳ですが、本書を読んでおけばそんな戸惑いを覚えずにすみます。また「応用群論」(裳華房)を読む前に本書を読んでおけば群論特有の考え方に取っ付き易くなるハズです。(本書は応用群論の第１章への導入としても読めます) また閉集合と距離の概念の関係からトポロジーのアイディアを導く下りを読むと「具体例→一般化→別の具体例」という数学特有の思考回路("スイッチバック方式")が良く分かって非常に得した気分です。(岡潔先生が「問題というものは具体的な問題からどんどん抽象して、最終的に最も理想的な形にすることが大切だ。問題が理想的な姿になれば、自然に解ける筈ですよ」と言っておられた意味が良く分かりました)
本書と共に「現代の古典解析―微積分基礎課程」(森 毅)、「無限のなかの数学」(志賀 浩二)を読んでおけば高校数学から大学数学へのギャップを乗り越える苦労も軽減することでしょう。Good luck!

『数えるという手続きは、あらゆる有限個の集合を、自然数{1,2,3,…}の集合のなかに一対一に対応させることに他ならない。』
というような、思わず唸ってしまう説明が随所にしかも数学を知らない人にもわかるように散りばめられている。2章以降は群論を全く知らない人がいきなり理解するのは苦しいのではと私は思うが、1章はおそらくほとんど誰にでも理解できるものだろう。よくある論理的思考云々という本を読むくらいなら、こういった本をよく考えながら読んだ方が良いのでは、と思う。

また、数学を真面目に取り扱う人に対しても十分意味のある本である。大学に入ると、『ある集合の任意の元a,bに対し、次の性質を満たす演算∧が定義されているとき…』といったような、公理論的な手法がいきなり展開されていて、多くの人は面食らうと共に腑に落ちない感が残ると思う（少なくとも私はそうだった）。この本では、そういった現代数学特有のやり方のパースペクティブが得られる可能性が高いだろう。できるだけ若いうちに読んでおきたい本である。

遠山先生は東京工業大学の教授として数学の研究に携わる一方、熱心に数学教育の改善を図った先生として著名です。本書は遠山先生の一般向け著作の第一作です。
内容はカントールの集合論からトポロジーまで。決して易しい内容ではありませんが、著者の記述が巧みで、集合と位相の初歩はこの本で理解できてしまうという、啓蒙書としては奇跡的な名著です。
復刊を強く希望します。「理数離れ」が危機感をもって叫ばれている今日こそ本書のような啓蒙書の傑作が復活するべきだと思います。
