5.0 out of 5 stars 「ヒューマニズムと実証主義のルネッサンス時代は、一方では残虐と迷信の時代であった」, 2006/3/8
中世キリスト教国の異端審問の歴史における「魔女裁判」について記述されている。「世界国家」統轄のために作った異端審問制度により、いつしか魔女は異端者であるものとされ、「魔女裁判」にて残虐な拷問・処刑を執行されるまでになった。衝撃的だったのは、「ヒューマニズムと実証主義のルネッサンス時代は、一方では残虐と迷信の時代であった」との記述である。ルネッサンス時代は近代科学の始まりであり、多くの著名な科学者がいるが、彼らまでもが「魔女裁判」肯定派であったとは信じがたいことであった。また、１）知識はその所有者次第で最高の悪徳となる、２）狂信と政治が結びついたときの恐ろしさを認識すべし、３）科学の敵は宗教でなく神学的ドグマである　を歴史的教訓として理解できたことはよかったと思う。

構成並びに文体、そして何故どうしてその時代に、これほどの狂信的な状況が醸し出され熱狂の渦が拡大していったか、大変理解しやすい非常な労作であると思う。
他の新書にも類似のものが昨今出ているが、全く比べ物にならない。

先日亡くなったローマ法王が在命中に、過去に教会が犯した数々の過ちを謝罪した。その中で「教会の大罪のひとつ」としてあげていたのが、中世に行われた魔女狩りである。
魔女狩りに関しては、世界史の教科書に出ている記述程の知識しかなかったが、この本を読みこの上なく非道な事が宗教の名の下に行われていたのだと知った。
宗教が絡んだ犯罪は現代社会でもたびたび起こっており、そのたびに宗教のもつ二面性（救いと破滅）を感じる。無論宗教を否定するだけではならない。多くの人が宗教により救われ、信者の宗教活動のﾎﾗﾝﾃｨｱなどの活動なしでは、戦地ではより多くの被害者がでるだろう。
しかし神の名を利用して、己の私腹を肥やしたり、欲望を満たしたり、復讐の手段としてこのような魔女狩りのような事が行われていたのは許しがたい。
信じられないことだが（この本では述べられていないが）第二次世界大戦直前まで魔女狩りが行われていた地域もあったという。
とにかく、歴史の暗面を知る上でも読んでおきたい一冊である。
