　困ったことに、丸山真男はいま読んでもぜんぜん「古くない」。これは丸山真男のもちろん「エライ」あるいは「正しい」ところだが、「不幸」あるいは「無益」なところでもある。
　

　丸山真男は「日本（の知識）人はバカだ。そのバカのパターンはこれとこれとこれだ」というのを、実にわかりやすく書いたのだが（もちろん彼はそういうバカはもうやめにしようとして書いたのだ）、いろんな人が、つまり日本の知識人たちは、「バカとはなんだ、バカとは」と、この丸山真男をいろいろと批判した。もちろん、「当たってる」ことを「わかりやすく」書いたので、随分と賛同者やファンやエピゴーネンも現れた。
　

　「不幸」あるいは「無益」というのは、丸山真男がそう言ったのはずっと昔のことなのに（この新書は１９６１年に出てる。しかも丸山真男が直接扱ってるのは日本の戦前の思想家たちである）、あいかわらず日本（の知識）人はバカだからである。しかも、その「バカのパターン」は、あいかわらず丸山真男が『日本の思想』に書いたもので出尽くしてる。だからこの本は、「日本の思想」と名乗る権利が（今でも）あるのである。
　
　丸山真男が書いたのは未だに「当たっている」。けれど逆に言えばそれは、せっかく（人に恨まれるくらい本当のことを）書いたのに、何の役にも立たなかったということでもある。
　

　丸山真男に向けられたたくさんの反論も、のこらずその「バカのパターン」を繰り返していた。それどころか、丸山真男に向けられたたくさんの賛同も、のこらずその「バカのパターン」を繰り返していたのである。

おそらく日本でもっとも名前を知られている政治学者は丸山真男でしょう。
ところが広く知られている一方で、イメージが一人歩きしてる人物の1人ではないでしょうか？

東洋(日本)政治思想研究者、科学としての政治学、現実政治への発言、
戦後民主主義の旗手、近代主義者、ときには西欧崇拝者など
様々な側面、評価があり、何かつかみどころがない気がします。

私のような門外漢にはそれを把握する術はありませんし
本書に収録されている4つの論文・講演を読んでみたところでも
はっきりとはわかりませんでした。

しかし、なぜ丸山真男がそれほど評価されるのか、言及されるのかは
その卓抜した分析・思考からうかがい知ることができます。
40年以上も前の本ですが、現代人が読んでも示唆に富む本です。
政治思想に関する知識がなければ全く読むことができないという本では
ないと思われますので、興味がある方は読んでみてはどうでしょうか。
(丸山真男を解説した著作も数多くありますが、イメージにとらわれないためにも)

1・2章がやや難解なので、3・4章(どちらかというと3章の方が読みやすい)
から読んでみるとよいと思われます。

本書は4つの文章から成り立っているが
この本は最初から読むべき本ではない
書名にもなっている1章の「日本の思想」から読むより、
講演スタイルの4章「『である』ことと『する』こと」をよんでから
順々に最初に戻っていったほうが、挫折しないですむ
「タコツボ」などのさまざまな概念が、
学問のみならず日常生活を考える上で非常に参考になる
