私がこの本を最初に読んだのは、およそ５、６年ほど前になります。うる覚えですが、確か社会科学論文の形式の原形となった本だそうで、論文の書き方を学ぶために読んだ覚えがあります。あまりの量の多さに、脚注をすべて飛ばして読みましたが、これでも内容を把握する上では十分でした。

最近読み返したのは、今更ながら欧米の宗教的文化に深い関心を抱くようになったからでして、とりわけ宗教上の原理主義や聖戦といった、日本人にはなかなか馴染みにくい行動原理を理解する上で、本書は少なからず役立つような気がします。また、依然として物議を醸す余地はあるにしろ、かつてわが国を含め世界中で巻き起こった学生運動の最中にも、本書を座右の書としていた人々がいたことも、内容を吟味する上で無視し得ないことでしょう。
もちろん、本書に書かれている内容はすでに反証されているとみるのが通説のようですが、何ゆえカトリシズムではなくプロテスタンティズムなのか、こうした問いに答えられるようになるだけでも欧米の文化を理解する上では、必ずや大きな一歩になるとだろう思います。

会社で掲げられるVISIONであるとか　経営方針に　人間として共感できるものが　もっと必要であるというのが最近の小生の意見であったが　一方　そんなことが可能かと疑問も思っていた。

そんな小生に対し　本書は　目から鱗という感じであった。個人的な禁欲をいう宗教が　営利追求の資本主義をもっとも育てたという　ある意味でのアイロニーは　人間のもつ複雑さと　可能性を思わせた。
岩波文庫の白であると　ちょっと引く人も多いかもしれないが　これは面白い本です。

　いわずと知れた宗教社会学の名著である。資本主義の成立をウェーバーなりの理論により説明している。
　「近代」資本主義の成立はプロテスタンティズムの禁欲的側面から成立したと彼はいう。
　当時としても斬新な論文であったと思われる。
　論文自体は少々難解ではあるが、とりあえず読み進めてください。最後に訳者の大塚氏の解説がたいへんわかりやすいので、内容が充分に理解できなくてもご心配なく。
　時間のない方はとりあえず解説を先に読んで読み進めるのも効果的だと思われます。
