This is a new revised version of Dr. Laslett's standard edition of Two Treatises. First published in 1960, and based on an analysis of the whole body of Locke's publications, writings, and papers. The Introduction and text have been revised to incorporate references to recent scholarship since the second edition and the bibliography has been updated.

自然状態、自然権、社会契約、立法府の最高機関性、抵抗権といった概念が本来どういう意味であったのかを理解するためには、原典である本書を読むのが一番だと思う。所有権の絶対性や正当防衛、親族関係について論じた部分は、現代アメリカ保守層の倫理観を理解する上でも有益である。１７世紀の本なので敷居が高く感じられるかもしれないが、読んでみれば分かるとおり、何も難しいことが書いてある訳ではない。速読すれば１日で読了できる程度のものである。時間対効果は極めて高いと言えよう。

なお、他のレビュアーも指摘するとおり、「しかも」を逆説の意味で使い、関係代名詞をすべて「〜するところの」と訳す等、岩波文庫版の訳文にはやや不自然な所がある。それでも全体の理解には差し支えない。

また、ロックは同じことを繰り返し長々と説明しているので、一文一文を丹念に精読していると途中でウンザリしてしまうかもしれない。少なくとも最初に読む際は、パラグラフごとの要旨を拾い読みするつもりで速読した方がよいと思う。

　歴史において市民革命を知らぬままに「近代」的な法形式、政治形式を取り入れてしまった
この国においては、市民が知的に革命を経験することによってのみ、その歴史の不在や矛盾を
補うことができる。そのために必読の一冊。

　本書は『政府二論 Two Treatises of Government』の第二論文の翻訳。ロック本人の英語は
あまりに悪文で、頭痛なしには読めない代物。

　理解にはまずなによりも、トマス・ホッブズの前提が欠かせない。まずはそちらから読まれる
ことを強力にお勧めします。
　その上で、ロック的特質のハイライトと言えば、何を措いてもかの高名な「抵抗権」の議論。
他のレビューが言及するように、ひとつには、アメリカの建国理念と現行の合衆国憲法の理解に
不可欠なお話。無論、日本国憲法が想定する政治システムを把握するためにも限りなく有効。

　各人が賢き市民たること、それこそが「近代」の不可欠の要素。そのための前提をなす
重要な一冊。

本書は革命期のイギリスにおいて書かれた政治学における不朽の古典である。J.ロックは、フィルマーによる族父論を否定し、自由で平等な人間像のと、権利の保護のための社会というパラダイムを本書において確立させることに成功した。
彼はホッブズやルソーと並ぶ近代社会契約論を代表する思想家であり、自由と平等の尊重を自明視する現代において、その思想の根元を探るという意味で本書を読む意義は大きい。読後、社会契約理論が前提とする｢自然状態｣や｢社会契約｣ということについて批判的に検討すれば、現代における自由主義の功罪について自ずと理解が深まるであろう。
