ファーブルの『昆虫記』は1879年から1910年にわたって刊行された。改訂版には写真が随所に添えられている。「私は息子のポル・ファーブルと協力して前版で批難された欠陥を埋めることにつとめた。この版は本書の研究の対象をなす大部分の登場者と場景とを示す二百枚以上の写真で飾られることになる。その大半は自然の中で生きているものをそのまま写した」と説明されている。私はこれに関して強い関心を抱いている。

1910年ごろといえばまだライカも生まれていない時代である。蛇腹式のカメラを使えば接写はできる。しかし当時の感光材料の感度は低いものであった。昆虫の動きは素早いので自然のまま撮影することは結構難しい。撮影風景の写真を探したが、見つかったのは自然の中ではなく研究室で撮影されたものだ。ファーブルの前でカメラを操作するポルの写真だが、それでもたいへん貴重な資料と言えるだろう。なによりも議論の反証として、まだ黎明期であった写真術が使われたことは興味深い。蛇足ながらかのナダールがファーブルの肖像写真を残している。

　20代半ばになって、今更読みました。素晴らしい本です。虫の詩人万歳。そして感動あまってファーブルを「ファーブル先生」と敬称付きで呼ぶようになりました。
　私がこの本を名作だと思う一番の理由は、この作品がただの虫の観察記ではなく（精緻さと科学性、根気等考えるとそれだけでもすごいのですが）、アンリ・ファーブルが詩人の眼と心をもって虫たちの生活を眺め、描写しているという点です。
　彼が世界の謎を探求する、冷静な科学者であるのは間違いありませんが、彼は虫たちを愛し、敬虔な驚嘆の思いでその神秘の営みを観察し、同じ地球に生きる生命として虫たちに敬意を払っていると思います。「人間に分からない神秘が、この世界にはたくさん働いている」―小さな虫たちの生命の宇宙を見詰めるファーブルと共に過ごすうちに、彼の持つ美しい驚嘆と敬虔の念に感化されて、「私たちの住むこの惑星は、こんなに美しく、豊かで、謎に満ちて面白かったのか！！」と、世界を眺める眼まで変わってしまいます。私は今までより昆虫を恐いと思わなくなり、彼らが近くに寄ってくるとじっと見るようになりました（笑）。
　加えて、叙述が実にうまい。無味乾燥な観察レポートなどではなく、これは物語、文学といっていい。ファーブルの巧みな語り口につられ、謎の答えが知りたくなってどんどん虫の世界に引き込まれていきます。
　この岩波版は完訳なので、全10冊と長旅になります。集英社から、抄訳ですが易しく書かれた全6冊版（しかも鳥山明先生画の、胸がわくわくするような素敵な表紙です）が出ているので、「10冊完読するのは厳しいかも・・」という方はそちらもお勧めです。
