ここに訳出されているのは、初版"the Origin of Species"です。
なぜ、その後の研究の蓄積を含まない初版なのでしょうか？
これについては、「解題」で訳者が、進化学者の古老Ernst Mayrエルンスト・マイアの言葉を引いて述べています：

進化生物学がまだ若い科学であった時代にはダーウィン自身のテキストで学ぶ必要があり、それで最終版が主要なものになったが、すでに多数のテキストが出されている現代では、われわれが『起原』にもどってみようとするとき、西方世界に旋風を生じさせたその最初の版を手にとることが必要になる…

この本はもちろん博物学（生物学）を根元から作り変えました。
当時人々の大半は生物種が分岐することすら納得してはいなかった。
そのことを頭に入れてこの本は読む必要があるでしょう。

叙述は慎重であり、時に迂遠です。
おそらく、少しの予備知識は必要でしょう。
多く入門書はありますが、私には佐倉統「進化論という考え方」が、

今日的な視点!から平明な説明をしていて助けになりました。

画期的な論理を展開した科学者の多くが、宗教との対立など、センセーショナルに語られるのだが、彼らは、驚くほど挑戦的ではない。より真実に近いことを追求しようと、あらゆる情報を精査し、長い時間を考え続け、そして、自分が納得できる論理を紡いでいく中で、やっと、その理論に至っている。この本を読むと、その思考の過程を垣間見ることができる。いや、かなり実感できる。しかし、この本を手にしたほとんどの人間は、最後まで読みきっていないことが、ほぼ確実に予想できる。大抵の人間には、ダーウィンほどの忍耐強い観察と思考についていくことは不可能なのだ。しかし、読みきれないからこそ読む価値がある本もある。数ページでも読み進めれば、自分が如何に浅はかな閃きを求められる世の中に生きているか、ということに気づいてしまうだろう。そして、いつか、これを読みきれる人間になりたいと願う。（読みきれない人間のメモ）

　現代の基準に照らしてみても「ダーウィンってすごいな」と思わずにはいられない。現代の研究者にはものをじっくりと考える時間がほとんどなく、ともかくもデータを取るので必死だ。そして研究の先にあるビジョンについて語らせれば、テレビのワイドショーで使われているような陳腐な決まり文句がポンポン出てくるので、聞いている方が恥ずかしくなってくる。本書を読むと、物事をとことんまでつきつめて考えることがどれほど重要であるか、身に染みて分かってくる。
