数学者アダマールが「数学における発明の心理」(みすず書房)を書くきっかけにもなっているという本でもあります(註：このアダマールの本も面白いです！)。数学者であるだけでなく、物理学・天文学などの他の自然科学にも多大な影響を与えたポアンカレによる科学教育の書、お薦めです。
しかし旧字体なので読むのが大変です。(2003年9月25日第35刷の時点で)ですので、いっそのこと英語で読んでしまうという選択もありえます。比較的平易な英語で書かれていますので、小難しい日本語訳よりは読みやすいかもしれませんね。
その場合"The Value of Science: Essential Writings of Henri Poincare (Modern Library Science)"がお薦め出来ます。この本には「科学と方法」(Science and Method (1908))だけでなく、現在品切(重版未定)の「科学と仮説」(Science and Hypothesis (1903))・「科学の価値」(The Value of Science (1905))も収録されているので、ポアンカレにご興味を持たれる方にはお薦めします。(Doverからも"Science and Method"が出版されていますが、そちらとほぼ同額ですので、上記"Essential Writings ..."の方がお薦めできます)

２０世紀初頭の科学的発見の意味を検討した科学思想史の先駆的な書。
数学における無限論、非ユークリッド幾何学、原子論、力学、天文学等の
当時の科学的新知見が取り上げられている。数学編は集合論を中心に展開。
所謂「数学的帰納法」の有効性を主張している。正直、後半の力学あたり
は私にはかなりしんどかったです。偶然をめぐる議論では複雑系の発想を
思わせる部分もあり、著者の思考のキラメキを感じました。
新知見の発見に必要な要素や教育のあり方にも触れられていて、教育論とし
ても一読の価値はあると思います。
なにより、発見に必要な心理的要因にふれているのは、実際に業績をなした
本人ならではのユニークな内容です。

”科学の方法は観測と実験”。無限の時間があれば、視るだけでよい。時間が無限でないので、視るか視ないかが第一の問題。”感覚と器機との不備にもとづく誤差”など、科学の基本的な事項を紹介している。たま、"aaaaabbbeeeeii,etc."という文字列をニュートンがライプニッツに送ったこと、それがあらゆる微分方程式を解きうるという意味であることを紹介している。物理学全般についても概観しており、科学、技術を勉強する際の出発点としてよい。
