プラグマティズムの集大成者で教育理論家でもあったジョン・デューイが、シカゴ大学に併設された小学校で、教育実験をしながら、執筆されたのが本書である。既に1世紀以上昔の話だが、中身は未だに古びず、10年近く前にわが国の文部省が推進し始めた「総合教育」の意図も説明されている。教育の目的を受益者から逆に読めば、「不易」な観点で目標を設定できよう。これを忘れる限り、教育政策は画餅となる。戦後の教育政策は死屍累々のはずだが、官僚や政治家が無知なので自覚がない。数十年以内にノーベル賞受賞者数十名などという愚かしい目標を掲げること自体、無知無教養を曝け出している。教育など語る資格はない。そうした愚考を食い止めるために1世紀以上昔に実験され、集大成された実践的教育論。デューイらしく緻密な描写と記述が教育と社会との距離感を精確に描いていて、素晴らしい。教育学の古典足りうる1冊。

この本で印象に残るのは、デューイが産業革命による技術革新が教育界に変化を及ぼすと指摘したこと、もう1つは「総合学習」の実験はすでに当時において行われていたことである。現代の日本において、もう一度検証する価値のある一冊だろう。

古典ながら、今尚実践されようともしていなかったのではないかと思えるほど、現代の教育を受けた者としては、唖然とした。つまり、現代教育の理想としてそのまま通用すると素直に思えるからである。本書を読むと、一体教育者は何をやっているのかと遅ればせながら思う。それほどに、本書の確信をつく主張は曲げることができないものなのであろう。
　内容に至っては、極めてシンプルであり、小難しいところはほとんどない。
　見ようによっては、自己啓発書としても通用するのではないだろうか。もちろん、その際は現代教育の実体、在り方に失望することとセットだが。
　このように、思うと学校という教育の現場もいかに社会の大人の縮図たる、学校外の権力意識、に追従して成立していたのだろうことが思いやられる。
　いずれにしても、本書を読むことを通して、新しい自分の教師像が浮かぶような気がした。
