アランの幸福論は有名のようですが、この本はあまり知られていないようです。素晴らしい内容です。少しキリスト教色が強いですが、読んで損は絶対ありません。鈴木秀子先生のファンなら気に入ります。

　第3巻では、まず幸福とは神と共にあることなのだと断言し、そうあるための方法を述べている。外的な幸福(成功や富)は、これを失う恐怖を伴うため、真の幸福ではない。
　病気についても述べている。病気を転機として人生を見つめること、人の苦しみを知ることができること、治癒する際に幸福が味わえることから、病気や老衰ですら幸福となりうる。
　なすべき事として、自分が所属する国や民族のために悪と戦うこと、足るを知ること、人生の努めを果たすこと等を挙げている。また、幸福のためには虚栄心と貪欲を取り除き、心からの親切を自らが敬虔に感じ、他人に与えることが重要とも述べる。
　また、宗教を否定するイデオロギーに対しては断固として反対の立場を貫き、民主主義の成熟に期待を寄せている。
　最後に、魂の高みを目指し、利己心と享楽欲を捨て、神の言葉に従うことこそ幸福な生活への道であると述べている。そして死ぬまで精神的に高みを目指して前進を続けよと鼓舞する。

5.0 out of 5 stars 濃厚なエッセイ集, 2008/10/12
長く読み継がれている名著というだけあって現代でも通じる事が多い。
キリスト教が根元にあり、欧米精神と考えれば入りやすいだろう。
この先も人間の本来の姿、幸福を求める本質は変わらないと考えると、将来、未来にも通じるエッセイである。
このエッセイは、自己啓発本の視点から見ると、これはすべての本の原点ではないかと考えてしまうほど濃厚な物であった。
これを手元に置けば大概の本は薄くしたスープになってしまう。
