訳が難解なんです。なんで難解なのかなと思うでしょ？　まあかなり古い訳だからってこともありますが、それより何より、原語のデンマーク語から訳してないのがいただけません。ドイツ語訳を訳すという重訳のせいで、わけがわからないことになっちゃってるみたいですね。ちくまから「死にいたる病」の題で出ているんですが、これが原語からの訳。しかも不必要なくらい注釈が多いのが有難いのか迷惑なのか。でも、そっちの方が読みやすい文体です。だから、ファーストチョイスとしてちくまの方が手に入るのなら、断然そっち。無理して難解でもいい、いかにも深そうでわけわからない哲学をやってる気分にひたりたいっていう人は、この岩波、ってとこですかね。

そんなわけで、読みやすいレビューを心がけてみました。
でも、内容に触れられる程頭がよくない自分に絶望です。
（いや、こういう日常語的な「絶望」を論じてる本じゃないですが）

キルケゴールによればそれは絶望である。絶望するということは、他の動物と異なり人間を人間たらしめている特徴であるという。
この絶望状態は、死を選ぶことさえもできない。自己を捨てたいと思うことが絶望の状態ではあるけれど、それが不可能であるがゆえに絶望するのだ。絶望している人間は、悲しみ苦しんで見えるとはかぎらない。それが必ず本人に自覚されるものでもない。人によっては、仕事も家庭も安定して充実しているように見えても、心の中には絶望がある場合もある。そしてその事実に気づかないことが絶望の状態に他ならない。

どうこう思う以前に、読解力を試され論理力を学ばさせられた気がしなくもないです。
キルケゴールは、絶望とは何か、それはどのようにして現れるか、絶望が死に至る病であると言えるのはなぜか、そして絶望はキリスト教的な意味において罪であると論じている。ただ、本書のみでは絶望から脱することについては言及していない。別書で述べているけど、それは神に対しての贖罪として論じられる。救いを得るならば、罪があがなわれて絶望からも脱することができるってことかな。無神論者に救いはないのか？

著者の定義する『絶望』の種類やその性質について、独特の文体を以て、説明がなされている。そして彼が言うには、絶望＝罪であり、人はそのことを自覚し、神の下に在るべきだという。それは、キリスト者としての立場が顕れているものだといえよう。無論、その多くがキリスト者ではない日本人も彼の主張する人間の定義域について触れることは、とても重要なことだと思う。

ひとつ苦言を呈するとすれば、訳文の言葉の選び方が、日本語的に違和感があることと、注釈の数は多いが、その一つ一つがあまり良心的でないことだ。そのためか、部分的に解釈が困難な箇所がある。
