速読や多読が注目を浴びる最近の傾向とは、一線を画しています。
生きること、考えることに対する読書の位置づけを改めて考えさせてくれる一冊です。

　多くの本を読んで楽しい、感動する時間を過ごすことは至福の時間と思っていた。それゆえ、多読をすることに意義を感じていたが本書を読んで自分の浅はかな考えに気づかされた。
　表題「読書について」は一読すると辛口な語りであるものの真実を突いている事柄、現象に思い当たりはっとされた。表紙には「読書とは他人にものを考えてもらうことである。一日を多読に費やす勤勉な人間はしだいに自分でものを考える力を失ってゆく。」と紹介され、それは自分が多読することに単に憧れ、自負さえしいてることをこなごなに砕いてくれた。
　また他の文中に「・・・読まずにすます技術が非常に重要である。」ともある。この一見、不可解な文章はその後、その技術の具体的な内容、良書の説明と続き、「人生は短く、時間と力に限りがあるからである。」と結ばれる。つい書籍の新刊を目にすると購買意欲をそそられ読まないて置かれている本が増えていく自分を戒める内容であった。また、とても１８５０年代に書かれた内容とは思えない古さを感じさせない鋭さが随所に散りばめられているようだった。
　本書は他に「思索」、「著作と文体」について書かれていて、興味深く読めた。
　今後も読書は楽しみたい。多くの面白い、感動する、または思索を豊かにする本に巡り会いたいとは願うが、多読にこだわらず良い本は繰り返し読みたい。本書は自分のこれからの読書人生に参考にしていきたい考えに多く触れることが出来た良書でした。

大学に入学したての頃、生協で何気なく手に取り、そのタイトルに惹かれるものがあって購入し、その内容が私自身ずっと考えてきたことに酷似していることに驚き、貪るように読んだものでした…。

読書家で博識な人ほど頭が良いのか、なぜいわゆる「知識人」であるにも関らずおかしなことを言う人が存外多いのか、＜読書＞と＜思索＞の決定的な違いは何か…。ショーペンハウエルが持ち前の毒舌（？）で読書の弊害を指摘し、思索の何たるかを説き、当時のドイツ語の過剰なまでの修飾表現・大言壮語、文法の乱れ、出版界の体たらくなどを一刀両断します。

解説者も指摘している通り、ショーペンハウエルには確かに天才主義的な所もありますが、彼の指摘している所はかなり鋭いと思います。
単なる博識ではない知を求める人、読書家を自負する人、現代の情報・出版の洪水の中で喘いでいる人に是非おすすめします。
