キケローは63歳で亡くなりましたが、ある本によればその当時の平均寿命は20歳程度だったことを考えると、非常に長生きした人です。約60ページの長くない文章ですが、老いることで見えてくる人生の素晴らしさを謳い上げたキケローの文章は、2000年も前に書かれたものとは思えず、また精神性の高さに驚嘆させられます。長生きして、このような境地に到達し、後世に残せたキケローは幸せ者かも。

老年の大カトーが、小スキピオとラエリウス（キケロ『友情について』でも登場）を相手に、
老年が惨めな、避けるべきものなどではないことを論じる。
一般に、老年は公の活動から遠ざけ、肉体を弱くし、快楽を奪い、死に近いとされて、疎んじられる。
カトーはこの４つの点について、自分の例や知人の例、さらにはギリシア哲学者の例や意見などをまじえつつ、
「そうではないのだ」ということを順々に丁寧に説明していく。
例えば、老年は死から遠く離れていない、という点については、若死にする場合も多いし死はみな平等に訪れるという実例に加え、
魂は不死であるし、もし、肉体も魂も何もナシになってしまうという意見を採るとしても、それはそれで害はない、
という哲学をもとにした意見をもって、論駁する。
老年に重きを置き、いかに生きてゆけばポジティブに老年を生きることができるのかわかりやすく示され、
もしかすると現代の自己啓発本としても機能するかもしれない興味深い一冊。
巻末には、本書の登場人物三名および著者キケロに関する解説、年表、訳注つき。
印刷も大きめの活字ですっきりと読みやすく仕上がっている。

塩野七生さんのローマ人の物語を読んでいると　登場人物の著書も読みたくなるのが　余禄である。キケローはカエサルに比べて　どちらかというと塩野さんには馬鹿にされて描かれているので　どんなしょぼい男かと思ってこの本を読んでみたが　どうして立派なものである。日本人が縄文時代だった頃に　ローマではこんな本を書いている人がいる。これでは欧州人が自分の文化に自信を持ち　それ以外を野蛮であると考えても無理は無いというものだ。
それにしても塩野さんのキケローに対する見方は辛らつであったと思う。日本人のキケロー観は　塩野さんの本で確定するというのが小生の確信であり　キケローの不幸である。まあ彼女の恋するカエサルが同じ時代にいたのが、キケローさん、不幸でしたね。
