良書に出会えた満足感､幸福感を得られます。
昔、エピクテートスの名をヒルティの著作やマルクス･アウレーリウス『自省録』で知って以来、手頃な文庫版で手に入れられないものかと探しました。

奴隷出身の著者（正確には弟子による筆録）に後世のローマ皇帝や哲学者が賛辞を送っている、つまり、それだけ人類普遍の真理のようなものが語られています。

自分の意志でどうにもならないことに執着しすぎて、結局自分自身を苦しめている。他人の心の中なんて支配できるわけがないのに、その他人の心の変化や他人からの評価に一喜一憂している。エピクテートスはそんな人々を戒めています。本当に大事にすべきものは他にあるだろう､と。私自身､そのことに気づかされてから､随分気が楽になりました。

ストア哲学というと拒絶反応を起こしがちな向きもおられるでしょうが、我欲物欲に溢れた現代社会に生きる上で、優れた先人の智恵に触れることのできる書です。
