アリストテレスの悲劇論として有名な詩学が収められています。
訳のすばらしさもさることながら、それ以上に驚かされるのは
目が眩むような注の量と、巻末の分厚い解説です。
アリストテレスのような極めて難解で時代背景も全く異なる哲学者は、
単に原文を読んだだけでは理解できないことが多いですが、この解説は、
つまらない史実を列挙して、誰でも分るように<大意を要約するというような従来の付録の域を出ない解説とは違い、
詩学の本格的な注解として読めます。それでいて、文体は平易、かつ
明確で初心者でも十分理解できるように配慮されています。

この本のあとに、ニーチェの「悲劇の誕生」を読むと、二人の偉大な
哲学者の「悲劇」に対する考え方の相違が良く理解できると思います。

　本書は、アリストテレス(B.C.384-322)の『詩学』とクイントゥス･ホラーティウス･フラックス(B.C.65-8)の『詩論』とが、カップリングされている。何故時代も異なる二人の著作が一冊に収められているかというと、両作とも、後世の(もちろん現代の)、美学に大きな影響を与えているからにほかならない。

　特に、アリストテレスの『詩学』は、｢悲劇論=文学･演劇論｣という射程だけではなく、広く｢美学芸術論｣において重要であり、そしてさらに(過去から争点である)、｢カタルシス(浄化)｣と｢ミーメーシス(模倣)｣については、｢美学芸術論｣以上の広い意義を、現代になって特に、投げかけているように思われる。それは、先の語を、精神医学や一般会話の中においても、時々用いられている点から窺えよう。

　アリストテレスの翻訳は、読み下すとなると、骨が折れることもあるが、本書の訳文は、とてもスムーズで良い。さらに、他のレヴュアーの指摘どうり、訳文･訳注･解説が非常に良いことも、付け加え大いに強調したい。
　美学はもちろんのこと、｢心がなにかを感ずる｣という現象に興味を抱く方に、ぜひとも手にとってもらいたい、重要な古典である。

　本書はアリストテレスの『詩学』とホラティウスの『詩論』が収められています。『詩学』の方は、叙事詩、悲劇、喜劇について書いています。しかし本書の中心は叙事詩と悲劇となります。この本は当時世に出ていた叙事詩や悲劇などに共通する属性を抽出しようという試みではありません。むしろ、優れた叙事詩とはこうあるべきであると著者が信じている事柄を列挙していくという形を取っています。
　『詩論』についても劇とはこうあるべきというホラティウスの思いがつづられています。また文章は読者に語り掛けるような書き方がなされています。

　この本を読んで最初に思ったのは、以外とスラスラと読めるということです。もっと抽象的なことがたくさん出てくるかと思っていたのですが、そうでもありません。この本の注はすばらしく、分からないことがあったらその注を参考にすることが出来ます。また、本書の最後にある訳者による解説は、『詩学』と『詩論』の理解を深めてくれます。訳者による解説は非常に勉強になりました。
