　世の中について，自分について考えるため，それも家庭や学校や職場で，意識するしないにかかわらずすり込まれるさまざまな思想，意見，イデオロギーの透明な道路標識や鎖を断ち切って，原理的に考えるために役立つような，思考の道具とその使い方の訓練が記された，理想的な哲学の教科書があったらいいのにと思う。アリストテレスの『形而上学』は，そうした自分なりの教科書をつくるための最良の拠り所ではないか。それが，文庫でいつでも入手できるのは，たいへん喜ばしい。
　残念なのは『自然学』が文庫化されていないことだ。生成消滅，増減，変化，移動など，動かされ動かしあうこの世の事物についてはとくに，形而上学と自然学は連なっている。自然学は形而上学の基礎ともいえる。是非，『自然学』も手に届きやすいように文庫化してほしい。

~本書は言うまでもなく，西洋のすべての哲学者，思想家にとって第一級の対話相手であり続けてきた古典中の古典です．

今日『形而上学』と呼ばれているこの本は，アリストテレスが折に触れて作成した覚え書きや講義ノートが集成され再編集された結果できあがったものです．著者（あるいは著者たち？）が意図した一冊の「書物」というようなものは現実には存在しません．そのような有り得べき「書物」は，残された断簡を「読みとき」「解釈し」「再構成」する一人一人の（あなた~~やわたしたち）創造的で注意深い読者にとってのみ存在するのだと言えるでしょう．

それゆえ，本書を初めて手に取る読者は，ここに普通の意味での「書物」を期待してはいけません．むしろ，繰り返し繰り返し!問いかつ答えることによって出来上がっていく「書物」の「原型」が，剥き出しの思考をともなって放り出されているのだと理解してください．そして，アリストテレスの複雑な思考の跡を丹念に追ってゆく楽しさを味わっていただきたいと思~~います．~

この出隆氏の「形而上学」の訳業は正確な翻訳として学会でも評価が高い（ただし決して読みやすいという意味ではないが…）。訳者注がかなりのページを占め、事項索引、固有名索引なども備えられて、とても親切である。アリストテレス哲学が後世に与えた影響は計りしれない。西欧中世のスコラ哲学もそうだし、イスラーム圏でも神学確立にアリストテレスが熱心に研究された。近世でもヘーゲル哲学、マルクス主義において決定的な弁証法的思考をこの信頼性の高い邦訳を通して原典から学ぶのは決して意義のないことではないと思う。
