2006年、ローベルト・シューマン没後150年を機に
岩波書店が重版再開した文庫です。

プラトンの『対話篇』を想起させる
フロレスタンとオイゼビウスの対話や
ショパン、メンデルスゾーン、ベルリオーズらの作品の批評
そしてブラームスへの期待を綴った文が収録されています。
またシューベルトとベートーヴェンに対する
惜しみない賛辞にも触れることができます。

読者の中には多少古風であると感じるかもしれませんが、
吉田氏の翻訳にはシューマン自身に語らせようとするような配慮が
あると思いました。

シューマン（もちろんクララも）が大好きで大好きで大好きなんですが、
この本を読んだとき、ああこの人を好きで良かったと心底思いました。

自分も天才作曲家でありながら、
同時代に生きる天才たちが何ゆえ天才なのか、何ゆえ素晴らしいのか。
天才でも秀才でもまあそこまでいかない方でも全くそうでない方でも瞬時に理解できるよう（ご本人曰く）書いてあります。批評はかくあるべきですね。
（カタカナ語をのべつまくなし並べ立てる現代の知識人は参考にしてください！！）
ついでに次世代を担うであろうブラームスまで紹介してくれるんですから、
若い芽は早いうちに叩いておけ！なんてケチな事は一切いたしません！！！

ショパンの演奏会に聴衆として同席していた時に、ショパンがシューマンが来ている事に気づいて急遽曲目をシューマンの曲（確か謝肉祭！）に変更したエピソード（しかもメンデルスゾーンも同席！！）
なんて想像するだけでワクワクする話なんかも出てきます。

気前のいい大天才は美人で才能豊かなお嫁さんと共に素晴らしい曲を後世の我々に残してくれただけでなく、こういう面白い話もたくさん残してくれていて、いやはや感激至極です！！

　『腕白時代(生意気盛り)』や『美学入門』もまったく読んだことがないが、‘ジャン･パウル’という名前だけはしばしば書籍中にみかけるので、たとえれば揺りかごのなかで聴いた子守唄のように、この名に懐かしさと親しさを覚える。その、シューマンが強い影響を受けたという‘ジャン･パウル’の上記小説中の、双子の主人公(ヴルトとヴァルト)をモティーフとしたらしい‘オイゼビウス’と‘フロレスタン’の対話の部分が、じつに楽しくて、ついつい何度も読み返してしまう。プラトン対話篇にも似た議論の白熱ぶり。そのディオニュソス的陶酔。内向的･外向的(分裂気質･循環気質)という両極端の性格傾向を体現する両人物は、シューマンに内在する二つの人格傾向の形象化(客観化、対象化)で、空想力豊かであった彼による、とびきりお洒落な葛藤処理方法でもあったようだ。

　ショパン、メンデルスゾーンやシューベルトその他への賞賛、とくにベルリオーズへの情熱的で暖かい賛辞には、こちらの胸も熱くなる。そしてなにより、シューマンの純粋さと人のよさは無類。この当時の在ドイツ音楽家たちの交流を遠まきに見聞するだけでも、この上なく耀かしい物語を聞いている気分になる。時の社会情勢は知らないが、音楽的には、ただただすばらしい時代=芸術空間にみえてしまい、このような歴史的逸話が実際にあったらしいことが、とてもうれしい。人類史上、生涯ディレッタントのまま、一流の音楽家でもあった人はシューマンをもって嚆矢とし、一部の専門家集団にかぎられていた音楽は、この後、さまざまな人たちに門戸を開いてゆくこととなるらしい。

　神経梅毒で病院にあったという晩年のシューマンの孤独な姿は、とても痛ましく、悲しい思いがするが、本書収録作が書かれたころの、健筆を揮う機知縦横･才気煥発なロマン主義者の風貌は、華麗な綺羅星のようで、みていて気が遠くなるほどにまぶしい。恵まれぬ家庭環境と苦労と金銭的窮乏、義父との争いや気高き精神的苦悩、芸術的葛藤の生――とても、凡人には生き通すことのむずかしい、苦痛の多い生涯ではある。…とはいうものの、それでも彼は、やはり恵まれた人にはちがいない――これほどまできららかな夢、童心の無垢とのあいだに幻想の虹をかけ、絶望の暗闇に彗星のような‘希望の光芒’の尾を曳く音楽と言葉とを、私たちのこころに紡ぎ出せた人であるのだから。
