文字でなく、口伝で伝えられていたころの仏典は、こんなにも素朴で、リフレインが多くて、詩（うた）のようだった。

スッタニパータを読んだ人は、必ずや最初の章（蛇の章）の「犀の角」のところで、けつまずくだろう。

７５回におよぶ強力なリフレイン（でも岩波文庫だとたった５頁）。
内容もさることながら、このグルーヴ感は圧倒的。すこしだけでもかいつまんでほしい。。

１　一切の生き物に対して暴力を加えることなく、
　　一切の生き物のいずれをも悩ますことなく、
　　また子女を欲するなかれ。
　　いわんや朋友（ほうゆう）をや。
　　犀の角のようにただ独り歩め。

……

４３　四方のどこにでもおもむき、
　　　害心あることなく、
　　　何でも得たもので満足し、
　　　諸々の苦難に堪えて、
　　　恐怖することなく、
　　　犀の角のようにただ独り歩め。

……

５７　義ならざるものを見て邪曲にとらわれている
　　　悪い朋友を避けよ。
　　　貪りに耽って怠惰な人に、みずから親しむな。
　　　犀の角のようにただ独り歩め。

５８　学識ゆたかで真理をわきまえ、
　　　高邁・明敏な友と交われ。
　　　いろいろとためになることがらを知り、
　　　疑惑を除き去って、
　　　犀の角のようにただ独り歩め。

　　　網にとらえられない風のように、
　　　水に汚されない蓮のように、

近年、宗教と言う言葉を聞くとあまり良い印象を抱かなくなったように思います。仏教の創始者であるブッダですが仏教とゆう宗教抜きにしてもすぐれた思想家であり、仏教自体が宗教よりも思想に近いことを教えてくれます。ブッダが宗教家と言うよりもモラリストであることが良く分かります。その人間観察力はとても２千年以上昔の人とは思えません。寝る前や電車などで読むのに最適です。私は無宗教ですが生涯かけてこの本を読むつもりです。

原始仏教原典の一つである「スッタニパータ」とは、「仏教の多数の諸聖典のうちでも、
最も古いもの」（本書）であるため、当然、われわれがブッダその人に最も接近できる
媒体である。そこには煩雑な言葉などはなく、簡単素朴に人が生きる道が語られている。
翻訳は、仏教学の第一人者であった中村元さん（1911-1999）。日本語も、簡単素朴
である。

また、注釈が充実している。実に、本書の後半半分のページをさいて、文化的背景や、
原語を紹介している。よって、非常に分かりやすい。

ブッダとの対話を楽しみ、「人はどう生きるべきか」について、ブッダから学び、考え
ることができる、人間にとって必読とも言える書。
