「茶の本」というタイトルは、とくに若者にとって魅力的なものではない。かく言う私も高校時代に今は亡き教師から熱弁をふるわれたが、このタイトルではどうもピンと来なかったという記憶がある。
本書『茶の本』は、茶の本ではない。欧米人に日本文化を理解させるためには、まず彼らの気を惹かねばならない、そのためにとられた戦略からこのタイトルとなったと思われる。これは決して茶の本ではないのである。
本書は東洋の美意識、わけても日本の空間的美意識の奥深さを伝えて余すところがない。これは天心の同時代人である漱石の、とくに『草枕』に通ずる美意識でもある（すみません、この指摘は、ちくま新書『法隆寺の謎を解く』の終章、「日本文化の原点に向かって」のなかでで武澤秀一さんがいっていることの引用です）。
西洋化とのあいだでゆれた明治時代、これほどまでに東洋、日本の文化価値を知りぬき、そして主張した真の国際人の声に、まずは謙虚に耳を傾けたい。

　「死の術」である「サムライの掟（武士道）」に対するものとして、「茶道」を「生の術」として捉えており、「道教」や「禅道」よりの影響を指摘しつつ、その「相対性」に着目しているのは、西洋の「絶対性」を意識してのことだろう。特に「禅道」と「茶道」のつながりについて詳細に述べられており、両者に共通するものとして「素朴・簡素」「純粋主義」「卑俗からの自由」「審美主義」などの言葉が用いられている辺りは、西洋文明を意識しすぎているように感じる。

　現代でも充分通用する、「茶道」を中心とした芸術一般に対する鋭い考察は非常に興味深いが、西洋文明に対する反発と同時に西洋化の波に逆らうことができない挫折感が随所に見られ、ある意味懐古主義的な雰囲気が漂っている。本書の最後を飾る「利休の死」が、「日本文化の終焉（＝西洋文明の旋風）」を象徴しているように感じるのは気のせいだろうか？

新渡戸稲造の『武士道』が日本人の倫理意識の源泉の一を描いたものとすれば、本書は日本人の美意識の源泉の一を描いたものと云える。その意味で、両書は相揃って「半双の二曲物屏風」を構成する近代日本が生んだ重要著作であると考える。

本書を一読して、（１）茶道が建築や庭園、工芸、陶器、生花など今日に伝わる日本文化の母胎であったこと（91〜93頁）、（２）清潔なること必ずしも美ならざること（60〜61頁）、（３）美は細部に宿ること（重複の回避につき64〜65頁、花と掛け軸や彫刻との「協奏曲」につき88〜89頁）、（４）茶道における崇高な目的は自らを芸術そのもの（芸術的人格の表現）にまで高めようとする点に存すること（91頁））などの気づきを得た。

薄いからといって簡単に読める本ではないが（特に道教などの知識が必要であることを痛感）、味読すれば得るところの多い名著だと思う。末尾で千利休の最期の姿を描いた挿話も心に残る。「今日は工業主義のために真に風流を楽しむことは世界至るところますます困難になって行く。われわれは今までよりもいっそう茶室を必要とするのではなかろうか」（66頁）。
