天は人の上に人を造らず、人の下に人を造らずと云えり。
されば天より人を生ずるには、万人は万人皆同じくらいにして、生まれながら貴賎の上下の差別なく、
万物の霊たる身と心との働きを以って、天地の間にあるよろずの物を資り、以って衣食住の用を達し、
自由自在、互いに人の妨げをなさずして、各安楽にこの世を渡らしめ給うの趣意なり。」
ここまで引用してあると、学問のすすめの真髄が分かるような気がする。

日本人なら読んでおきたい古典。

『天は人の上に人を造らず人の下に人を造らず』
この文章は本書の冒頭第一文にあり、学問のすすめと言えばこれを思い起こす人も多いだろう。
しかし著者の最も言いたいことはこの文章ではない。

冒頭の文は、今の世の中の機会均等という性質を言っているにすぎない。

機会均等すなわち、誰にでもチャンスはあるんだから努力して学問しないともったいないではないか、というのが著者の本当の主張したい点である。

ここからさらに派生して、本書では、我々が社会の一員としてより豊かな人生を送るために「最低限」必要かつ超重要な事項が多く書き記されてある。

人間として、そして特に日本人として現代を生き抜きたいという意気込みを持っている人(あるいは持てないでいる人も)、一度は読んでみる価値あり。

タイトルと著者名、『天は人の上に人を造らず、人の下に人を造らず』で
始まる事は日本人のほとんどが知っているはずです。
しかし、内容はあまり知られていないのが残念です。
私も読んで初めて知ったのですが、
「人は皆平等だが、その人に差をつけるものは学問である」
と福沢諭吉さんは伝えたいのです。
学問はした方が良いと痛感させられます。

文語体ですがわかりやすい文章で書かれていて読みやすいです。
一生に一度は読むべき本だと思います。
