幾度か手を加えてきた長南氏による『プラテーロとわたし』が遂に岩波文庫に入りました。前回の『エル・シードの歌』同様、綿密に付された註によって歴史的、社会的、文化的背景を共有しないわれわれにもその詩情を理解することが出来るようになっています。詩集に訳注なんて、と思われる向きもあるかも知れませんが、これが本来のあるべき誠実な翻訳者の姿なのです。挿し絵もかわいいです。

江國香織さんがエッセイの中で、この本は世の中の善いものがすべてありのままに書き込まれているというようなことを言っていましたが、まったくそのとおり。
スペインのアンダルシアの小さな町の自然や人々の生活を彩り豊かに、香り豊かに綴った詩集。読むと、やさしい気分になれるし、ロバを相棒に自由に旅してみたい、なんて思ってしまう。

ヒメネスが、愛するロバ、プラテーロと故郷アンダルシアで過ごした静寂に満ちた日々を描いています。花や果物が咲き乱れ、美しい夕日の中でのんびりと過ごす彼ら。ヒメネスの描く自然があまりにも美しくてため息や時に涙がこぼれ落ちてしまいます。詩とは、感情をこんなにわかりやすい言葉で美しく描けるのだなあと初めて感じました。

長新太の挿絵もとてもいいと思います。
