けなげな少女ペリーヌは、遠いインドから陸路フランスまで旅を続けてきた｡父母も財産も、たった一人の友達のロバも失い、飢えに苦しみながら、会ったこともない祖父を求めて｡着物は破れていても下着の洗濯を欠かさないつつましいペリーヌは少女の鏡といえよう｡

昭和１６年の翻訳ですが、この作品の完訳はこれだけということで貴重な作品です｡重版された今が買い時ですよ｡

ペリーヌはアニメで有名ですが、その歴代アニメシリーズのヒロイン達の中でも
最も過酷な運命の持ち主です。

ハイジのように両親や大人達の庇護を受けられる年ではなく、アンのように
飛びぬけた想像力がある訳ではなく、セーラのように苦しみを分かち合う
友達が居る訳ではありません。

両親を失い、お金もほとんど無い彼女は、異境の地で一人ぽっち。その上
（アニメとは違い）見た目もインド人とのハーフの姿。バロンも居ません。
そんな過酷な状況で、彼女は両親や出会った人々への愛情、日々の倹約と工夫、
そして努力で自分の運命を切り開いてゆきます。

幼い頃に見たアニメの原作との認識しか無く、軽い気持ちで読み始めましたが、
現代の日本人が忘れかけていると思われる、誠実に生きる事の大切さを改めて
教えてくれる、この上無く美しい物語でした。

訳が古いので旧体字や仮名使いが気になるかもしれませんが、すぐに慣れました。
中学生以上なら問題無いと思います。

ずっと、読みたいと思っていました。再販されたときいて、もしかしたら新訳が出てこないかと待ったのですが、見つからず、しかたなく買いました。旧仮名遣いがこれほど読みにくいとは。「をぢさん」ってなんだ？読めない漢字が多い。パソコンにも入っていないような旧字に辟易としています。「言語は時代と共に進化する」という、学生時代の言語学の講義を思い出しました。老人が「美文だ」と懐古するにはいいけれど、過去の遺物にするにはもったいない良い作品であるうえに、子供向けに著されたものを、これでは活字離れを加速させる一方でしょう。
