圧倒的な迫力、そして個人的には経験者ゆえの疲労感で、読後完全にノックアウトされてしまった本著バルザックの”絶対の探求”は、結婚後のある時期に、科学の命題＜万物の根幹を貫く“絶対”とは何か？＞に再びとりつかれ、妻子ある家庭も財産をも崩壊させるまでに科学に好じてしまった、人格も学識も兼ね備えたある人間の破滅模様を描ききったものである。主人公は、今際の際“ユーレカ！”と叫び、万物を貫く普遍的真理“絶対”を見いだしたかのようであるが、そのまま虚しく、苦悶の表情まま永遠の眠りにつく。職務柄とはいえ、おもわず一気に読破したわけだが、科学に限らず、宗教しかり、仕事しかり、ボランテイアしかり、家庭そっちのけで、盲目的にこれに邁進する人間という生物の恐ろしさを、バルザックは見事に描き出している。それはあらゆる全体主義的、共産主義的恐怖とも軌を一にするのであろう。釈尊のいう中道＜極端は忌避すべきもの＞、もしくは儒教における中庸の理念は、古今東西においても真理なのだと改めてそう痛感しつつ、何よりも大事なもの、それはまずもって家族と家庭、そしてその延長にある郷土や国であって、教条や仕事に没頭するのは、特に守るものを有する者、ここでは妻子ある者だが、にあっては第二義であるという、生物にとっては至極当たり前である、が、失念しがちな原則を、あらためて思念・認識させてくれる。同時に、愛するとはいったいどういうことなのか？、といった男女関係についても、読者の中には一考するものがあるだろう。愛する者の心の赴くままにさせるのが愛なのか？、家族という枠を守るためには、愛する者であってもその行動を限定すべきなのか？などなど、想起は尽きぬ。本著を、人生における一つ真理の階段をあがるためのグレートブックスの一つとしてぜひ位置づけたい。

バルザックの作品の中ではあまり有名でないものの
意外に面白い。
ものに相対して没頭してのめりこむ人は
この悲劇を一度は読んで
一回くらいは自分を振り返るのもいいのかもしれない。
やさしい心を持ちながらも、絶対というものの魔力にとりつかれ
それを追い求めずにはいられないものの悲劇。
魔力により周りのさまざまなものを失っていき
ついぞは自らも失ってしまう。
そんな絶対はしかしながらいつの時代も魔力をもって
人をひきよせる。

　『リーマン博士の大予想』を著名なノンフィクションライターがこの小説に擬えていた。数学に見放されて久しいので、いわば第二志望と思って読んだところが・・・！
　本人に自覚があろうがなかろうが、作者は人の心のツボを熟知した人だった。描かれるのは「天才」というか天災のような男と、巻き込まれた人々の悲劇なのに、怒りの拳を握りつつ、噴き出すほど笑うこと数度。作品が巧まずしておおらかなせいだろうか。それとも自分の身内に「天才」がいないからか。実際、「天才」やそれに振り回されている人なら、共感で泣いてしまうのだろうか。
　ともかく、この「天才」は懲りない。かつて優美で細やかな愛情を見せていた彼の姿は、徐々におぞましさと哀れさを帯びる。また、それによって物語の後半は微妙なサスペンスとなり、ページを繰る手が速まる。「えっ？！」連発の末、ラストは・・・。
　加えて、冒頭のフランドル考察はフェルメール（１７世紀オランダの画家）の室内画などを想起すれば、すっと納得できるし、うっかりこちらの物見高さを指摘されて、ぎくっとする部分もある。
　現在、古書でしか手に入らない状況が惜しい。内容は若い読者にも十分楽しめるだろう。読めない漢字があれば、御祖父さん、御祖母さんに聞いたり、やむを得ず飛ばしても、前後から意味はわかるのでご心配なく。
