シラーに心酔し、神の世界をかいま見たかのごとく神々しい詩を多数残したものの、
人妻であるズゼッテ・ゴンタルトとのプラトニックな恋愛の末に精神のバランスを崩し
精神病患者として後半生を過ごしひっそりと世を去った詩人、フリードリヒ・ヘルダーリン。
今や彼の作品に触れることは難しいが、ありがたいことに岩波書店から出ているこの文庫には
「世の喝采」「私が子供だった時…」「ヒュペーリオンの運命の歌」等の代表作が一通り収録されている。

ただし、傑作中の傑作「ディオティーマ」
（ズゼッテ・ゴンタルトと出会って自分の心が救われた経験を詠った詩）が
収録されていないことだけはどうしても納得できない。
また、他の詩もできるならヘルダーリン研究の第一人者・手塚富雄氏の翻訳で読みたかった。

　ヘルダーリンは生まれながらにして天空の極みだけを見続けていた。地上界の騒音や軋轢は耳に入らず、気高き真空の閃光と崇高な輝きに己を同化しようとした。いや、同化したのだ。だからこそ、あの穢れなき恍惚と至福が詩として結実した。

　詩は、少なくとも詩人にとって精神そのものでなければならない。そして詩が美しくあるためには、精神が地獄を通過していなければならない。ヘルダーリンにとって地獄とは、遙かな高みを求めて跳躍すればするほど墜落を強いられ、さらなる跳躍へと追い込まれていく絶望的な反復にある。「狂気」は、その反復に勝利すればこその代償にすぎない。凡庸で臆病な精神が徒に狂気に憧れ、美化するのは慎むべきだろう。詩人の肉声は此岸に留まる者達の畏れを超えている。

シュルレアリスムは狂気でない人間が意図して狂気の領域へ踏み込んだものであるといえるが、実際に精神の均衡を失い精神に異常を来した詩人ヘルダーリンの詩は、意図せずとも「正気と狂気の狭間」を漂わなければならなかった、もしくは狂気の域へと向かう精神をぎりぎりの状態で押しとどめようとしていた、その攻防の中から生まれた詩であるといってもよい。天上的なハーモニーと至福の美、そしてその中に潜む歪み、それはまさにmy bloody valentineの音楽に通じるものがある。蛇足だが、ベンヤミン、アドルノ、ルカーチなどそうそうたるメンバーがそれぞれヘルダーリン論たるものを書き残してもいる。
