『ヴィルヘルム・マイスターの修行時代』は教養小説で、哲学者ヘーゲルの『精神現象学』と同じ性質のものと言われている。
それは、両者とも人間（自己）の育成が絡んでいるからである。

具体的に言うと、『精神現象学』の方は、その育成の対象が自分自身であり、『ヴィルヘルム・マイスターの修行時代』の方は、その育成の対象が主人公である「ヴィルヘルム」という点だ。

さて、『ヴィルヘルム・マイスターの修行時代』の内容であるが、主人公のヴィルヘルムは、さまざまな人間模様の中でヴィルヘルムが成長していく。失恋、仲間の死、子供との関係、ヴィルヘルムの負傷等、さまざまな場面がある。時には成功し、時には失敗する。時には何かに気付かされ、時には何かを失っている。こういうことは、物語だけの話ではなく、人間一人一人にも十分当てはまることである。

また、この小説での巧みな人間関係の描写は賞賛に値する。上巻と中巻で、ヴィルヘルムと関わりを持った人間達が、下巻で、実は何らかの形で繋がっていたことが明らかとなる部分も魅力的だ。

哲学的な要素を含みつつ、演劇的な部分（ヴィルヘルムは芝居に興味がある）もあり、とても読み応えのある本である。

教養小説とは、ひとりの主人公を設定して彼をして様々な成功、挫折や様々な人々との出会いを通して、その人間的成長を描くというジャンルである。この「修業時代」はその元祖的存在である。ヴィルヘルムという演劇に情熱を燃やす青年が色々な遍歴、経験、邂逅を経て人生に対する一定の結論を出すという形で、作者（この場合はゲーテ）の思想を述べるという作品形態である。ある意味「ファウスト」自体もそうだし、トーマス・マンの「魔の山」、ケラーの「緑のハインリヒ」そしてロマン・ロランの「ジャン・クリストフ」などはこの「修業時代」の影響を濃厚に受けた典型的な教養小説である。そういう文学的観点からこの作品の存在意義はとても高い。この岩波文庫の新訳は文章がこなれていて、読みやすく、長篇ながら読了するのにそれほど困難はないと思われる。またミニヨンという少女の造形とその悲劇は、ゲーテが創造した女性像でも特筆すべき位置を占めていると評価されている。
