ビルドゥングスロマン（教養小説）の元祖で、ヘルマン・ヘッセやトーマス・マンにも影響を与えたと言われる本書。「ファウスト」や「若きウェルテルの悩み」で有名なゲーテですが、本書はまた少し違ったゲーテの顔を垣間見れた気がします。堅苦しくなく、それでいて素晴らしい情景描写。ひと時の恋に破れ、それから多くの苦難や挫折を味わいながらも確実に自己を確立していくヴィルヘルムの姿が初々しい。

芝居オタクの主人公ヴィルヘルムが、家業も恋人も捨てて演劇の世界に飛び込み、一座の人々と旅をする中でいろいろな経験を重ね、成長していくストーリーです。
ヘルマン・ヘッセやトーマス・マンがお手本にしたと言われる優れた教養小説で、大切なことを読者にたくさん教えてくれます。それだけに、これを読んでいるうちに自分の心も成長していくような気がします。
一生に一度は読んでおくべき作品です。

教養小説とは、ひとりの主人公を設定して彼をして様々な成功、挫折や様々な人々との出会いを通して、その人間的成長を描くというジャンルである。この「修業時代」はその元祖的存在である。ヴィルヘルムという演劇に情熱を燃やす青年が色々な遍歴、経験、邂逅を経て人生に対する一定の結論を出すという形で、作者（この場合はゲーテ）の思想を述べるという作品形態である。ある意味「ファウスト」自体もそうだし、トーマス・マンの「魔の山」、ケラーの「緑のハインリヒ」そしてロマン・ロランの「ジャン・クリストフ」などはこの「修業時代」の影響を濃厚に受けた典型的な教養小説である。そういう文学的観点からこの作品の存在意義はとても高い。この岩波文庫の新訳は文章がこなれていて、読みやすく、長篇ながら読了するのにそれほど困難はないと思われる。またミニヨンという少女の造形とその悲劇は、ゲーテが創造した女性像でも特筆すべき位置を占めていると評価される。
