120年以上前（南北戦争よりちょっと昔）のアメリカで書かれた小説であり，ヘミングウェイも絶賛したことで知られるトウェインの名作。

アル中の父親から逃げ出したハックと奴隷支配から逃げ出したジムとが織りなす冒険の日々は，そのまま現代アメリカの児童虐待と黒人差別の問題に連なっているように読める。
これらの問題がアメリカの「陰」であるとすれば，彼らの求めた「自由」こそがアメリカの「光」（＝デモクラシー）の源なのかも知れない。

冒険の末に彼らを待つ運命は，果たして救いのあるものと言えるか言えないか。

『ライ麦畑でつかまえて』などを読んでアメリカを感じられた方には，ぜひ，ハックの冒険もお読みいただきたい。大人が読んでこそ感じるものの多い作品だと思うので。

ハックルベリー=フィンといえば、トム=ソーヤーの友人だ。
家もなく、木の上に暮らす彼が、黒人の友達と共に筏に乗って
様々な経験をする。
この物語はトム=ソーヤーと違って大人を対象に描かれた物語だ。
社会が抱える問題の結果としてハックも、そして一緒に旅する黒人も
存在している。
非常に考えさせられると同時に、楽しめる作品です。
ぜひご一読あれ。

時間的にトム・ソーヤの冒険からの連作になっています。
主人公は、トム・ソーヤの友だちにして浮浪児のハックルベリー・フィン。
トム・ソーヤの冒険でお金持ちになったハックは、ろくでなしの親父に金づると見込まれて半ば監禁されたような目にあいます。

親父の元にいることに身の危険を感じたハックは一計を案じて筏で冒険の旅に出ます。
途中逃亡奴隷のジムと行きあい一緒に行くことに。

ハックの身に起こる事件は本物の危険がいっぱい。トム・ソーヤの冒険が知っている地域の中の冒険なのに対して、広い世間に出ていくハックの冒険にはハラハラさせられました。
ハックは学は無いけど機転をきかして危機を切り抜けていく賢い少年です。

危険と隣り合わせでもハックのような自由な生き方を著者のマーク・トウェインもあこがれていたのかもしれません。
