聖書のわずかな部分からワイルドは一幕の悲劇を作り上げた。この一幕の中のドラマ運びの緊張感は恐ろしいものがある。台詞の一言一言がビシビシときまっている。登場人物の一人一人が生きている。加えて福田恒存の翻訳が見事である、うつくしい日本語である。まさにこれぞドラマである。

　ワイルドは奇抜な言動で知られ、非常に不運な人生を送った作家です。「没道徳」の烙印を押されがちな彼の作品にはしかし、人の心を惹きつけてやまない甘美で不思議な魅力があります。
　サロメは新約聖書における預言者ヨカナーンの受難の場面を一幕の戯曲にしたものであり、元の簡素な記述を何倍にも膨らまされた、不気味でおどろおどろしく、そしてどこかロマンチックな悲劇です。内容は短いので敢えてあらすじをここでは書きませんが、読む価値のある素晴らしい作品であることを保障します。戯曲なので実際のページ以上に短いため、文学だからと敬遠せずぜひ読んでみてください。このような作品を書くワイルドは『幸福な王子』などの童話の著者ワイルドと同じであることを踏まえると、より深く味わえると思います。

　なお、文庫では新潮版と岩波版が存在しますが、効果的に配置されたビアズレーの挿絵と福田恆存による名訳のため、この岩波版をお薦めします。印象に残る台詞と挿絵（余談ですがワイルドはこの絵が大嫌いだったそうです）に満ちた愛と憎しみの物語にじっくりと酔いしれてください。

ワイルドの書いたサロメはこれまで聖書や絵画のモチーフとして登場したサロメとは決定的に違う。サロメは自らの望みで、洗礼者ヨカナーンの首を欲したのだ。 この福田訳はサロメの淫靡さ、狂おしい激情が伝わる偉大な訳であり、これを超えるサロメ訳はでないのではないかと思われる傑作である。
