イギリスの海辺の町で母親と２人でベンボー亭をきりもりしている少年、ジム・ホーキンスが手に入れた１枚の宝島の地図から、冒険の旅が始まった。リブシー先生たちと宝探しに航海にでた彼を待っていたのは、厳しい海の掟と、ジョン・シルバーなど陽気な海の男たち、そして裏切りだった。船員に化けて船に乗り込んでいた海賊たちとの争いの中で、様々な男たちの生きざまを、ジムは知っていく・・・。
ジム少年が子供ながらにも勇敢で、海賊たちと堂々と渡り合うところが好きです。古典的児童小説でありながら大人から子供まで楽しめる冒険小説でもある、ページを開いた瞬間から海原に揺れる船に乗って冒険できる、ぜいたくな作品です。

登場人物みなが生き生きと、個性があって素敵です。悪役の海賊も魅的に描かれていて、カッコイイです

他の方も書いてらっしゃいますが、この岩波少年文庫の海保さんの翻訳が、今のところベストではないかと思います。
スティーヴンスンの文章は、滑らかで読みやすく、それでいて無駄なく美しく整っているのですが、他の出版社の文庫本などの翻訳は、どうもゴツゴツしていたり表現に洗練されたものがなかったりで、論文や評論を読んでいる「学者」さんが翻訳したなぁという感じの、納得出来ないものばかりでした。しかしこちらの商品は、挿絵も見事ですし、訳文もスティーヴンスンの原文のもつ魅力を、翻訳可能な限界近くまで引き出していると断言できる仕上がりです。

ちなみに、『宝島』という物語には、適正年齢はありません。読むことのできる全ての人へ、お勧めいたします。勇気と、冒険と、海賊が隠した財宝の眠る島が、今までも、そしてこれからも、あなたが訪れるのを時を越えて待っているのです。この物語を読み終わったとき、あなたが宝物だと感じる物は、もしかすると・・・。

波の向こうの宝島。
不気味な島でジムが出会う数々の駆け引きに
息つく暇もなく夢中になっちゃいます。

名訳！！さすが小説家！！
出だしの訳はイマイチですが、全体的にすごく巧いです。

なんで小さいときにこの本に出会わなかったんだろう。
もっと多感な時期に読んでいたら・・と思わされました☆
