オースティンの「高慢と偏見」が非常に良質の作品であることは疑いもありませんが、この岩波文庫の「翻訳」はお奨めできません。日本語として読んだ場合、駄文だと、私は思います。日本語として美しくないし、また、翻訳者が男性であるせいか、会話や感情の表現部分において、とうてい若い女性の言葉使いとして、ふさわしくないと思われる語彙を選択している箇所がいくつもあります。全体的に、とっても読みにくい文章です。
同じ理由で、岩波文庫の「説きふせられて」も、お奨めできませんが、こちらは他に和訳されたものが無いので仕方がありませんけれど、初めて「高慢と偏見」を読まれる方には、河出文庫の阿部知二氏の翻訳のほうをお奨めします。

どの作品でも極悪人なんて登場しないし、ハッピーエンドばかリ。じゃ､かったるい？とんでもない！オースティンの作品中最高傑作と言われる本作は、なんと言っても主人公エリザベスのキャラクターが魅力的。溌剌としていて、ウィットに富んでいて、自分をしっかり持っていて、若い女性なら現代でも十分理解できるちゃっかりした現実的な部分もあるし、共感できる事が多いはず。

「最悪！自分とは絶対合わない！」そう思った第一印象が、実はお互いを惹きつけて目が離せなくなる、そんな事ってあるでしょう。そんな相手がもう一人の主人公ミスター･ダーシー。お金持ちで、そこそこハンサムで、とっても鼻持ちならない！でも、やっぱり人って他人には簡単に見せない別の部分ももっているわけ。二人のやり!とり､駆け引きは、周りの家族･友人に振りまわされたリ巻き込んだり､と結構笑わせてくれるし、幸せな気分にしてくれる。

読書の楽しさを実感できる作品です。
舞台は１８世紀後半のイギリスのとある田舎町。ここに暮らすベネット家の
近くのお屋敷にあるお金持ちの青年ビングリー氏きたところから物語が始まります。
何度読んでもこの冒頭のシーンにはこれから始まる物語を期待させる魅力があります。

物語はビングリー氏とベネット家の長女ジェーン、ビングリー氏の友人ダーシー氏と次女のエリザベスの
両カップルの結婚までの過程を中心に進んでいきますが、最大のポイントはダーシー氏とエリザベスの誤解によるすれ違いの恋の行方です。

”高慢”なダーシー氏を嫌っていたはずのエリザベスが、ある出来事から彼に対して抱いていた自分の”偏見”に
気づいて、次第に惹かれていく過程はこの先どうなるのかとペーァ'めくらずにはいられません。

200年も前に書かれたこの作品が現在においても読み継がれているのは、恋愛や結婚といった普遍的なテーマを基に、一癖あるがなぜか憎めない登場人物や生き生きとした会話が織り成す日常生活のドラマを楽しむことができるからではないでしょうか。
