正式名称は『ヨーク出身の船乗り、ロビンソン・クルーソーの生涯と不思議で驚くべき冒険』。
1719年刊行。以降『その後の冒険』『反省録』と続くロビンソン・クルーソーシリーズの第一部。

小学生の頃、学級文庫の棚にあった抄訳を読んだ際には、「単なる漂流者のサバイバル物語」
としか感想を持たなかったが、10年余の時を経て子供向けではない本作を手に取った際には
その分厚さに仰天し、内容を読んで濃密さと思想性とまるで自らが無人島生活しているかのような
描写力にグイグイと引き込まれた。

1719年といえば生類憐れみの令が廃止され、大岡越前が江戸町奉行に就任した江戸時代の事であり、
内容も古臭いつまらないものではないかと思ったが、とんでもない。
今をもってしても古さを感じさせない作品であり、その理由は時代を超えてもなお共感できる
若き日のロビンソンの数々の葛藤、強い夢を持つが故の放浪癖、漂着後の行動の合理性にある。
また、この作品は凡百のサバイバル作品と違い、根幹となる深い思想があり、
キリスト教の信仰の問題を骨子として形成されている。

神に祈ったにも関わらず報われず無人島に漂流し、苦難だらけの生活を送り自らの不運を呪う主人公。
現世利益を中心に置いた、表層的かつ浅薄な信仰しか持ち合わせていなかった彼だが、
数々の艱難辛苦を経るうちに、それでも自らが生かされている僥倖を知り、真の信仰に目覚めてゆく…。
この辺りキリスト教になじみの薄い日本人は理解し難い部分かも知れないが、
キリスト教徒や信仰に対して迷いを抱いている人間であればより楽しく、そして深く本作を読む事ができるだろう。
理的・宗教的考察を前面に出しており、社会学的な観点からも興味深く読む事ができる作品。
一冊に纏められるものを、わざわざ上下巻に分けているのが難点か。

子どもの頃に読んだ話とは、全く違っていて、
本当に驚きました。
『ガリバー旅行記』をきちんと読んだときと同じほどの
衝撃でした。
ただの無人島でのサバイバル冒険譚ではありません。
人間の存在意義や文化の違い、信仰といったことを
決して説教くさくなく、考えさせてくれる素晴らしい作品です。

だからといって冒険譚としてのおもしろさも十分にあります。
サバイバルな世界を二次体験したい人も十分満足させる内容だと思います。

子どもの頃、子供向けに書かれたものだけを読んで、
そのままになっている人に、ぜひ読んでもらいたい１冊です。

私はこの本を若いときから何度読み返したことか。決して少年向けにとどまる作品ではない。クル-ソ-は当時のイギリスの中産階級の代表であり、自立と信仰を求める現代人に通じる何かを訴えている。
