チョーサーの有名な名作『カンタベリー物語』の翻訳。
さまざまな原書や現代英語訳、辞典などを参考に、文法的に正確な、
それでいて文章としても自然で、また原文の雰囲気をたいせつにした訳を
目指した好著。
また、註がたいへん詳しく、巻末の註を参照しながら本文を読み進めるだけ
でも、『カンタベリー物語』についての講義を受けたのに匹敵するくらい

さまざまな知識が得られ、とても勉強になる。
本書には、General Prologue及び、「騎士の物語」「粉屋の話」「家扶の
話」「料理人の話」「弁護士の物語」を収録しているほか、作者Chaucer自身
についての解説も付されている。
さまざまな階級の人々が語る多様なジャンルの物語が楽しめるオムニバス形式
の作品。

チョーサーの生きた14世紀は、騎士道、修道院、ペストの時代。
かわるがわるに話をするメンバーは、騎士、修道尼、粉屋と様々で、マザーグースの数え歌"Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Sailor"（鋳かけや、仕立てや、兵隊、水兵、金持ち、貧乏人、乞食に、どろぼう）を彷彿とさせます。

騎士道に関する話ではローマ神話がしばしば引用されるが、神々の定義は今知るローマ神話と異なる部分もあります。
月と狩の処女神ダイアナは、冥王ハデスの妻、あるいはプラトンの孫娘などと呼びかけられているのがその例。
デメテルあるいはペルフェフォネとの混同のようです。

女性に誘いをかけに行く若い男性が「つくばね草を舌の下に入れて」なんて風俗も登場します。
つくばね草は、葉っぱを見紛う緑色の花を咲かせる野草です。
良い香りがするとは聞きませんから、何かのおまじないでしょうか？

興の乗り始めたところでぶつりと終わっている話もあり、巻末の解説でチョーサーの死により完結を見なかったと知りました。

話自体を楽しむ、というよりは中世の暮らしを知るための資料。
騎士道ものの映画を好きな方は楽しめそうです。

『カンタベリー物語』は、さまざまな人たちが一緒に巡礼する中、各人が順番に物語をする。身分の高い人から低い人までいて、順々に語るのだが、とくに身分の高い人たちの物語には、決まって垣間見えるものがある。

敬虔な信仰と高貴な血筋を持つ女性（コンスタンツ）が船が難破したため異国に迷い込んでしまう。
また、
事情によりある男（アルシーテ）はその高貴な元の姿を隠して貧しい者になりすまして、城の従者として二年ほど暮らす。
だが彼らは、その生まれながらに持つ高貴さゆえに、異郷の地であろうと元の身分を隠そうと、相応の地位へと昇ることになる。

難破や恋の病により（原因はなんであれ）、彼らはいったんその身分が剥奪されるが、また元の位置へと帰っていく。これがカンタベリー物語のうち、
身分高い人たちが話す物語の基本構成となっている。

そこには、現状の地位を喪失するのではないかという不安、そして自分たちの地位は生まれながらの不変のものであることを、物語の形を借りて論証することで不安を解消しようとする意図が浮かび上がってくるように思う。当時の身分高い人々に共通した感情がそこにはあったのではなかろうか。

以上『カンタベリー物語』を、一面から見た場合の一所感にすぎないが、現代イギリス人の思考の原型、当時の歴史的背景、面白い生活史、ささいだが不思議な発想など、掘り起こしたくなる遺跡がたくさん埋もれていると期待している。遠い異国の遠い昔の物語と疎遠に思われず、多くの方々が書の考古学者になって『カンタベリー物語』から楽しい遺跡を発掘されんことを祈る。
