現代を生きる私たちにも、充分に当てはまる人生の教訓が寓話を通して書かれています。
全部で471の寓話が収録されており、中には似たような話もいくつかありますが、
1つ1つのストーリーは、長いものでも6ページくらいなので、ちょっとした空き時間などに1話ずつ読んでいってもいいかもしれません。
訳もいいです。イソップ寓話集の決定版と言えるでしょう。

「狐と葡萄」「北風と太陽」など子供の頃に読んだ話ががもう一度読みたくて購入したのだが、全４７１篇全てが面白い。解りやすい風刺と教訓、簡潔な文章、寓話の見本である。話の最後にオチのように寓意が書かれているのだがこれも良い。

無学な私は、解説を読むまで、イソップ寓話が紀元前のギリシャで生まれたことも知らなかったのだが、それを知った後で読んでみても、頷けることばかりである。人間の本質は何世紀経っても何も変わらないということか…。恐るべしギリシャ哲学。

全編を一気に読むのではなく、毎日少しずつ読むのがいいように思う。

子供の頃読んだ「狐と葡萄」の狐の最後のセリフ。私の記憶では「あの葡萄はすっぱいに違いない」だったのだが、原典訳であるこの寓話集では「まだ熟れてない」であった。個人的には前者の方が好きなのだが・・・。

「ウサギとカメ」，「アリとキリギリス」などお馴染みの話しも含め全部で470の寓話が収められている．
子どもの絵本などで紹介されるのは，イソップ寓話のほんの一部に過ぎないことをこの本で知った．
会話の中でイソップ寓話が自在に引用できるようになったら，
どんなにか話しに説得力が増すだろうか．
この本では，それぞれの話の最後に，例えば「ウサギとカメ」なら，
「素質は磨かなければ，努力に負けることが蔽い」
と話の寓意がつけられている．
これも子どもの絵本にはなかったのでは．
読み込めば，たとえ話がうまくなれそうだ．
