泉鏡花の初期短篇作品集です。「春昼・春昼後刻」など後年の傑作へと受け継がれていく鏡花世界の原点である愛と死を主題とした美しい短篇が集められています。初期作品という事で物語の展開が極端で無理一杯ですが、そんな事は全然問題ではありません。寧ろ物語の進行が荒っぽい為に、いつもですと乳白色の霧やら白銀色の月の光やら綿の絨毯の様な春の雲が何重にも覆い被さって輪郭がぼんやりとしていた物語の深部が、ちらりちらりと読者にも垣間見えてある意味官能的でさえあります。色々と書き記すべきなのかもしれませんが、鏡花についてあれこれ評論したり解説したりするのは、月見草の咲く池端を土足で踏み荒らすかの如くひどく無粋な事だと心得ていますし、鏡花を読む＝鏡花の世界に入る・鏡花を読する＝鏡花の世界から帰ってくるという事なので帰還した今となっては何も書きようがありません。ただただ印象深い台詞や一節が川魚の様に頭の中をうろうろと泳いでいます。短篇「外科室」で外科医が愛と死の極限で発する一言“わすれません。”が、全てであり永遠に感じられてきっといつまでも忘れられないのです。

最初にこの作品の存在を知ったのは実は映画の宣伝でした。
それまでは「泉鏡花」という作家の作品を読もうと思ったことも無かったのです。

映画のキャッチコピーが頭にずっと残っていて、気になってしょうがなかったのです。それは「ねむり薬は、うわごとを言うと申すから、私はそれがこわくってなりません」だったと思います。

この作品は、辻褄だとか現実感だとかそんなものは一切考慮せずに、その場の（外科室内の）情景の美しさを堪能していただきたいのです。

わたしはなんといってもこの「外科室｣が好きですが、「夜行巡査」「琵琶伝｣「海城発電｣も心に響きました。

男女の愛は美しいものですが、偲ぶ愛はさらに美しく、ついには破滅へと導くような愛はさらにさらに美しい。成就しないからこその美なのです。

映画は、後からビデオで見ました。私はたいへん良かったと思います。余計なシーンもありましたが、ほぼ原作に忠実に作ってありました。

ただ、難をいうなら貴船伯爵夫人はミスキャストだったように思います。高峰外科部長は非常によかったですけれども。

リクツに合わない話は我慢ならない、という方にはこの本をおすすめしません。
ただ、美を堪能したい方はぜひ読んでみてください。

◆「外科室」

　　一度目をかわしただけで会話すらなかった男性への想いを心中に持ち続け、
　　麻酔なしの手術という異常な行動に走った伯爵夫人は、いかにも「観念的」。

　　しかし、虚構と現実の区別が曖昧となり、フィクションのほうに価値を見出すように
　　なった現代から見ると、決してあり得ない、非現実的な存在とは言い切れません。

　　彼女の愛は、妄想と紙一重だったわけですが、それゆえに美しく純粋なのです。


　　本作は、愛の発生とその成就の瞬間を鮮烈なまでの美しさで定着させた作品です。
