　収録されているのは「二銭銅貨」、「Ｄ坂の殺人事件」、「心理試験」、「白昼夢」、「屋根裏の散歩者」、「人間椅子」、「火星の運河」、「お勢登場」、「鏡地獄」、「木馬は廻る」、「押絵と旅する男」、「目羅博士の不思議な犯罪」の12篇。もちろん乱歩にはほかの選集もありますし、文庫版の全集もあるわけですが、この短篇集はなかなかよい選択ではないでしょうか。乱歩をちゃんと読んだことがないけれど読んでみたいという人が、最初に手に取るのに適しているように思います。
　大正から昭和初期にかけての東京を舞台に展開するサディズム、マゾヒズム、フェティシズムに満ちた暗い物語世界が、じゅうぶんに堪能できます。鏡やレンズ、人形への執着ぶりは、やはり特に印象深いですね。既にレビューされているとおり、解説の文章も充実しています。

岩波文庫緑帯で読む乱歩。いかにも似合いそうな予感がして、本書を手に取った。

一度ならず読んできた短編であるが、この岩波文庫という器は実にゼロ年代の
乱歩にぴったり合っている感じだ。大変面白く読んだ。千葉俊二氏による書誌的
にも充実した解説（谷崎の研究者として高名な方だそうだ）も、とてもよい。

大震災後の帝都東京という場所と、バブル以降の長い沈滞期にある日本が非常に
近いところで共振している。「暇をもてあまして、人生に心底から退屈しきった
主人公」たち。「どんな遊びも、どんな職業も、何をやってみても、一向この世
が面白くない」という、八方塞がりの倦怠感。これらはまさに現代＝ゼロ年代を
表す記号でもある。

もちろん、描写の一つひとつの古めかしさや、乱歩独特の「ですます」文体の
野暮ったさはある。しかし、そういうヴェールを自分の読みでデジタル処理して
見直すと、現れるのは恐ろしく同時代的な物語である。

「ネット裏の散歩者」「フィギュアと旅する男」「携帯地獄」などと、ベタな
翻案をするだけでもその凄さは伝わってくる。

オールドファンにもこの新しい革袋はオススメ。若い小説読者で、乱歩なんて
「二十面相」と「少年探偵団」でしょ、と思っている人にこそ読んで欲しい。
「人間椅子」の奇妙な味にしびれます。

5.0 out of 5 stars バランスの良い作品選択　, 2009/11/14
江戸川乱歩の少年探偵団ものや通俗長編を読んで、「エログロ大衆作家」(探偵小説愛好家の中にさえもこの様な評価をする人もいますが)という一面的な印象を持っておられる読書家に読んで頂きたい作品集です。その意味で、岩波文庫に収められたのは乱歩ファンには嬉しい限りです。

乱歩の短編には、推理サスペンス系と怪奇幻想系の作品群がありますが、この短編集は２つの作品カテゴリーからバランス良く選択された12編を収載しており、乱歩短編の紹介としては悪くないと思います。

ただ、ちょっと代表作を読んでみたいという方には、新潮文庫の『傑作選』の方がお勧めです。そちらは9編しか収録されていませんが、価格も安いですし、「二廃人」「赤い部屋」という初期の佳作や「芋虫」という衝撃作を含み、どちらかと言えば推理サスペンス系の選択が多い構成になっています。

また、本格的に２つのカテゴリーの短編群を読んでみたいという方には、『江戸川乱歩全短編』3巻（ちくま文庫）が適しています。残念ながら、こちらは現在、品切れになっているものもあるようで、全巻揃えるには古書店から買うことになりそうですが。
