1931年、『放浪記』の原稿料を得て、シベリア鉄道に乗ってパリに出発した林芙美子。まず、当時の中国、満州、ロシア途中の模様がいきいきと描かれる。視点にはぶれがない。『放浪記』のときと同じく、林芙美子の個人としての気持ちがしっかりとした土台になっている。だからこそ、時代を経ても新鮮に感じられる。林芙美子にはどこへ行っても自分であり続ける強さがある。驚くほどの楽天主義。解説の立松和平氏が言うように、これが林芙美子の魅力である。視点はパリでもロンドンでも変わらない。林芙美子はコスモポリタンである。西洋を旅した日本の知識人の多くが感じたあこがれもコンプレックスも、林芙美子には無縁である。大阪の町、尾道の町を歩くのと同じように、自然に歩く。わからないものをわかっ!たふりをしない確かさ。これも魅力である。

この時代にこんなにも自由、奔放に一人で旅をした事に
驚くばかりです。文章も古臭くなく、素直で飾り気の無い言葉は
時代を軽々と越え、ストレートにこちらへ届きます。
それでいて世の中を一人の独立した女性として
正確に描写する。だからこそこのエッセイは本当に価値ある
ものになっているように思います。

林芙美子はどこを歩いても下駄で、いや素足で歩いている。いつもそんな地べたを感じさせる文章だ。パリにいても貧乏だが、だからこそ生活者のパリを感じさせてくれる。
