　明治時代の大インテリ（政府から派遣されて留学したのはご存知の通り）である漱石が、「文明開化」に対する抵抗感などを語っている。漱石の生きた時代、次々に輸入されてくる文化によって、人々は否応なしに急激な変化の波に呑み込まれた。漱石は、これから先、この変化のスピードはどんどん早くなり、生きにくい世の中にますますなっていくだろうと語る。これを読み、今の時代の忙しなさは、明治時代と地続きであることを知った。
「私の個人主義」なども収録されている。
　主に、「漱石の講演」が収められているため、読みやすい。

実は小説よりも好きかもしれない。
特に好きなのは明治三十四年三月二十一日の日記。

「未来は如何あるべきか。自ら得意になる勿れ。自ら棄る勿れ。黙々として牛の如くせよ。孜々として鶏の如くせよ。内を虚にして大呼する勿れ。真面目に考えよ。誠実に語れ。摯実に行へ。汝の現今に播く種はやがて汝の収むべき未来となって現はるべし。」

すごい。日記とは思えない。日記ってとても個人的なことを綴るものだから、これが漱石の素顔なんだと思う。作家として、人としての誠実さに感動する。

「今までは全く他人本位で、根のない萍のように、そこいらをでたらめに漂よっていたから、駄目であったという事にようやく気がついたのです。」このことに気付いた漱石は
この後大変”強くなった”と語っています。他人には気付かれない自分の中の煩悶に悩み、苦しみ続け、葛藤の末にたどり着いた彼の境地。これから社会へ出る人にぜひ勧めたい一冊です。
