作者自身が故郷の津軽を巡り歩いた経験を元に書かれた、
虚実混交の自伝的小説。この人の小説の中では結構長い部類に入る。

内容は、壮年期の太宰が故郷を旅行しようと思い立ち、
地元の縁者らと交流しつつ津軽各地を歩き回り、
行く先々の土地の文化・歴史・地理を読者に紹介する、
というものである。

太宰と太宰を取り巻く人々のほのぼのした交流が見られ、
物語の雰囲気は明るい。
津軽という土地を全く知らない読者に対して、
丁寧に、滑稽味を交えて説明する文章は良い。

物語の端々に郷土愛が見えるのはとても良い。
ただ、作者が津軽の子どもがきれいな標準語を話す様を見て喜ぶ描写もあり、
太宰が津軽のすべてを認めていた訳ではないことが伺える。

これは戦時の日本人の一般的な方言観なのかもしれない。
太宰としては、故郷の文化の特性を認めつつも、
それが時の流れとともに中央のものと同一になるのを望んでいたのかもしれない。

この本もいろいろな出版社で公刊されているが、
書体は岩波版が最も読みやすいと思う。

私はこの本を書店で購入したのだが、岩波文庫版と新潮文庫版とで迷った。最終的に決め手となったのが長部日出男による解説の面白さだった。内容としては「『津軽』の真相が物語る太宰のストーリーテラーとしての計り知れない力量」ということになろうか。これ以上言うとネタバレになってしまうので控えるが、この解説を読んで本編を読むと、さらに面白みが増すのではなかろうか。

『津軽』です。
太宰が久々に津軽に里帰りし、ついでに今まで知らなかった津軽の各地を旅し、再発見する、という話です。長編ですけど、そんなに膨大に長いわけではないですし、ネガティブだったり難解だったりする訳でもありませんので、とっつきやすいとは思います。

太宰ファンの人にとっては、太宰のルーツを知る、という位置づけの作品になるでしょう。なんというか、津軽の旧家に生まれた、というのは、太宰にとっては相当重い荷物だったのだな、というのが一番実感できる著作でしょう。今ならば「太宰の実家」と言うでしょうが、当時は「津島の弟で、小説書いているヤツ」だったのですから。

序盤のうちは、太宰があちこち行って、津軽の歴史を書いてあったりして、だからなんなんだ、という感じもしますが……物語としては、最後にちょっと感動シーンがあるので、最後まで読むのがよいと思います。
