ほんとうに記憶だけで書いたのだろうか。
大人の書いた子ども、ではなく、子どもそのもの──
本書はまるで、小さい頃に綴っていた日記を久しぶりに
開いたような懐かしく繊細で清浄な光に満ちている。
繊細であればあるだけ人一倍被り感じるものの哀れに
始終涙を浮かべる少年は周囲の野卑な者の目には
確かに煩わしく見えることだろう。
そしてそれが為にますます人嫌いや憂鬱症に拍車をかけ、
うちなるもの・儚いもの・美しいものに心惹かれ
耳を傾けていく彼の心のうちが薄玻璃の花のように
痛々しく愛おしく感ぜられる。
文章も美しく、自然で衒いがない。
仲良しの女の子が遊びにくる時の足音「ぽくぽくちりちり」や、
鳥が飛び立つ時の羽音「たおたお」など、
擬音語や擬態語も澄んでいる。
いつか全文を手書きで書き写してみたいと思う。

中勘助は何と言ってもその文体が非常に好きです。
独特の効果的な比喩表現を用いた、さらっと流れゆくような涼やかな文章に、私はある種の癒しを感じます。
作者の過去を作者とともに振り返っているうちに、自分の幼かった頃が思い出されて、不思議な哀愁と懐かしさが込み上げてきて涙が出ました。
美しい情景と、そのなかに生きる人々。

淡々と過ぎてゆく静かなる日々。
生があり、死があり、出会いがあり、別れがあり。
そうして成長していく勘助少年の姿は実に美しく印象的です。
それにしても自分の少年時代をよくこんなに覚えているなあ…

なんといっても文章の美しさ、優しさに、こんな素晴らしい小説が読める日本人である幸せを感じてしまいます。
作者に感情移入して切ない気持ちになったりするのですが、私は彼を愛してやまない伯母さんがたまらなくいとしくて、伯母さんが泣く場面では必ず涙涙涙です。
何度も読み返す本というのは何冊もないのですが、この本は数少ない読み返す本です。
大好きです。
