　幻想的な小説という部分だけではなく、明治政府に対して鏡花がどのような感情を抱いていたかということもこの作品の中から感じ取ることが出来ます。また『高野聖』に限ったことではありませんが、鏡花の作品には年上の美しい女性が登場することが多く、それは幼くして亡くした母親の姿を描いているようにも感じます。そんなことを念頭に置きながら読んでみると、鏡花という人物への興味も湧いてきます。

泉鏡花の代表作であり、初めて読んだ作品。
何気なく期待せずに読み始めたのですが、幻想的な文体で描かれる
女の美しさに惹きこまれて一気に読んでしまいました。

　日本文学史上の変異種と見なされているが、こういう伝統は江戸期にないわけでもなく、おそらく雨月物語などの影響を受けているのではと推測する。内容は伝奇・幻想文学というもので、高僧が美女の姿をした妖怪に誘惑されるが、徳高きゆえに救われる、という話だ。筋そのものはむしろ凡庸、というか、定型的なので、それを文学的にいかに描くか、というところで作者の腕が試されることになる。
　夏目漱石よりもさらに文体的には古く、読了するのに少々骨が折れるが、それが味だというものだと諦めつつ読むしかないだろう。
　たしかにこの時代、同じような特質を持った作家がいなかっただけに彼の存在は貴重であり、さらに硯友社の中でただ一人生き残ったというのもその個性のゆえであったことが納得される。

が。滝の流れに山中で見かけた美女を懸想する、って言われてもなぁ。
