漱石の自伝的小説。東京帝国大学の職を捨て作家になった頃の自分自身に起きたことをベースに書かれている。
夫婦の関係や親戚づきあい、借金の問題（主人公の健三（漱石）は借りに来られる方であった）、他人への妬み等、現代に置き換えても”フムフム”と考えさせられる内容になっている。
漱石自身とよく似た設定になっている主人公と養父、実父との関係が物語の大きな部分を占めている。この中には実際に漱石自身が感じたことが書かれているのではないか。
主人公の夫婦関係については漱石が実際に経験したことと、ほぼ同じことが書かれているであろう。
漱石の考え方が、わかり大変興味深い。

なお、漱石が東京帝大の職を棄て作家になったことを”無鉄砲な決断”のようにいわれることがあるが、この小説を読むと帝大の職（教職）は、授業の準備や試験の採点等で大変で給料も安く、それに比べると作家の仕事は原稿料も良く、書くことが得意な漱石にとっては教職よりも苦労が少ないものだったことがわかる。

彼岸過迄、行人、こころ、を経て漸く辿り着いた境地がここにある。漱石自身がモデルである健三は、運命に抗わず、運命を受容する生き方を選択する。漱石最晩年の心境・諦観が滲み出ている。しかし同時に、その心境を理解しうる読者には、静かに、漱石が生きる勇気を与えてくれているかのようである。

完結した著作としては漱石最後のもの。この後に「明暗」が来るが絶筆だからだ。自伝的小説といわれ、また、作風は一読して明らかなように、自然主義(花袋、藤村etc.)などにやや近い。色んな形態の小説を書いた漱石だが、当時の流行というかスタンダードみたいな書き方もやってみたのか。そういう意味では「漱石らしくない」。評価も分かれているようだが、自分の読後感としては、漱石のbest３には入ると思う。話は、主人公健三(漱石）が親族らに絶えずたかられる不愉快な生活を描いている。養父の島田やその女房らの不愉快感は格別。細君との冷え込んだ生活。舅との確執。それぞれとの感情の交錯、印象などが見事に描かれ、読者は我がことのように不愉快な感じを体現する。と同時に「世間」の一面が描かれる。それは見事だが、一方今日の感覚からすると、夫婦関係は、健三に非があると思える。散々不愉快に思っておきながら目の前の細君は健三の3番目の子供を孕んでいる。その辺りの感情的なことは何にも触れられていない。愚図で踏ん切りがつかず、理屈屋の割りに直ぐ相手の理不尽なレールに乗ってしまう脇の甘さ。その甘さを自覚してムキになる無骨。妙な自尊心だけ高い。だがそんなしょうも無い健三を描く漱石は、そのしょうもない自身の側面も知りつつ照らし出そうと懸命だ。有能で誠実で鈍臭い作家の風合いを感じてしまって、健三には舌打ちしても結局、漱石(健三）に親しみが増してしまう。終盤で実父に幼少期にとんでもない扱いを受けていることが急に描かれる辺りは、ちょっと唐突で、もっと作品の前提として手前で書いておくべきことではないかと、首を傾げる。だが、最後の終わり方はなかなか見事で、作品全体の姿としては、素晴らしい締めくくりだと思う。小説の締めくくりほど難しいものは無いのに。
