漱石の自伝的小説。東京帝国大学の職を捨て作家になった頃の自分自身に起きたことをベースに書かれている。
夫婦の関係や親戚づきあい、借金の問題（主人公の健三（漱石）は借りに来られる方であった）、他人への妬み等、現代に置き換えても”フムフム”と考えさせられる内容になっている。
漱石自身とよく似た設定になっている主人公と養父、実父との関係が物語の大きな部分を占めている。この中には実際に漱石自身が感じたことが書かれているのではないか。
主人公の夫婦関係については漱石が実際に経験したことと、ほぼ同じことが書かれているであろう。
漱石の考え方が、わかり大変興味深い。

なお、漱石が東京帝大の職を棄て作家になったことを”無鉄砲な決断”のようにいわれることがあるが、この小説を読むと帝大の職（教職）は、授業の準備や試験の採点等で大変で給料も安く、それに比べると作家の仕事は原稿料も良く、書くことが得意な漱石にとっては教職よりも苦労が少ないものだったことがわかる。

漱石の小説にはお金の問題があちこちに出てきます。
「こころ」で先生が人を疑うことを知ったのは、叔父の遺産の横領ですし
「三四郎」恋の駆け引きにお金がからみます。
「それから」では三角関係にある友達から借金を頼まれたり。
全て人間の関係からお金を切り離さないところに、漱石の小説のリアルがあるのです。

この小説は自伝的な小説ですが、終始主人公はあらゆる親戚からたかられます。
ほんとに相当腹がたってたんじゃないかと思います。あまりにも心理描写がリアルですもの。
主人公の奥さん、現代だったら絶対思いっきりテレビに電話して、みのもんたに相談してるんじゃないでしょうか。
