３０年振りくらいに読み返して、
「坊ちゃん」って饒舌で短気で喧嘩っ早い江戸っ子そのものだったんだ、と再発見した、というか思い出したのだ。

爽快な坊ちゃんの言動に時には笑い声まで出てしまった。

赤シャツとか嫌なやつをさんざんとっちめてやって、
赴任先の松山の学校をスパッと辞めて東京に返っていく坊ちゃんに、
「イヨッ！さすが江戸っ子、惚れ惚れするねー!!」と声をかけたくなる。

そして東京では乳母役であった清がまっているだけ。
いつも坊ちゃんを褒め称えてくれた清と、
玄関のない家で二人で暮らすことになるというところで、この物語は終わる。

この気質は漱石のそれでもあり、「我が輩は猫である」ではその饒舌さが思う存分ぶちまけられている。
絶対的孤独を語り始める、漱石晩年の作品のトーンとはまったく違う。
夏目漱石という明治の文豪の初期を知るには格好の書。

夏目漱石さんの有名な小説。
よく痛快だと言われている（ような気がする）。
しかし私には最後まで、いつも、どこか哀しかった。

主人公で、語り手である「坊っちゃん」は、ほとんど一人だ。
はじめから最後まで、味方と呼べる人間はほとんどいない。
家族でさえ否定的で、冷淡で、「親譲りの無鉄砲」とはいうものの、
その裏側に乾いた「諦観」すら感じてしまう。
それでも不思議と深刻さを感じさせないのは、
彼が自分に同情しないからだと思う。そして「清」の存在。

もう「坊っちゃん」ではなくなった語り手が語る、
「坊っちゃん」だった頃のエピソードは、それがまっすぐで
痛快であればあるほど、同じくらいの強さで哀しくなる。
面白いのに哀しい。ぽっかりと哀しいのに、十分すぎるほど面白い。
お見事。

読みだして、あれ、こんな話だったかな、と思った。
読みすすんでも、どうしても違和感が残る。
小学校のころに読んだ印象、あるいはそこかしこでの「坊っちゃん」のイメージとどうしても重ならない。痛快な青春小説という感覚でとらえていたのだ。
そうではない。
どことなく悲しい、寂しい話だと思った。
軽快なテンポの文章にのせて、ひとりぼっちの坊っちゃんが突っ走るのだ。
また読み返そうと思う。
違うことに気がつきそうだ
