この短編集、面白いです。
鴎外が50代を超えた大正時代に書かれているのですが、
文体、テーマ、倫理観等、現代小説と何ら変わりません。
特に簡潔な文体の力強さは驚きます。
藤沢周平や松本清張等を連想しました。
志賀直哉や谷崎のようなだらだらした小説、随筆とは全く異なる世界が広がります。
鴎外は現代小説の始祖と言われますが、
この短編集でその意味がよくわかります。
安楽死を扱った「高瀬舟」、嫉妬に狂った女詩人の殺人を描いた「魚玄機」、長い別離の果てに再会を果たした老夫婦の「じいさんばあさん」、「山椒大夫」などどれもお勧めです。

　まず『山椒大夫』は読んでいてどんどん先が気になるような内容だった。どんどん中心人物が変わっていくのも面白い。後半は疑問におもう部分もあるが、もう一回読み直してみると納得できて深みのある作品だと思う。
　『高瀬舟』は安楽死が主題の話。弟の死の場面は私にはちょっと体が痛くなるような内容だが、だからこそ苦しみが伝わり、喜助の決断した時の気持ちを考えさせられる。庄兵衛と喜助の価値観の違いも書かれており、喜助の性格を考えるのが面白い。
　また、この２作品に共通してでてくる単語があり、森鴎外の作品の面白さを発見することが出来ると思う。

高瀬舟が一番印象に残った。
弟を安楽死し島流しになってしまった境遇の主人公（喜助）が淡々と描かれている。
特に、安楽死の場面は情景が浮かんできて鮮烈な印象を受けた。
最も感銘したのは、喜助が「足ることを知っていて」、自分のおかれた境遇を
悲しむのではなく、むしろ全面的に受け止めていることである。
人はこのような境地に達することは本当に出来るのだろうか。
そんなことを感じた一冊である。
