「ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず」、の有名な書き出しで始まるエッセイ。平安末期の世相が落ちつかない不安定な時代に生きた長明は、人生の無常、有為転変の世相から離れ、出家して日野山に方丈の庵を結ぶ。そこで、四季の移り変わりに喜びを見出しつつも、悟りをひらくにはなお妄執があるのではないかと、反省しつつ心にもない念仏を唱える・・・。

俗世を離れ、悟りをひらいたようで、どこか突き抜けきれていない人間長明。それは、たまに都に降りていっては、自分の着衣のみすぼらしさを嘆くくだりなどに、ありありと顕れてしまっています。それなりに良家の出でありながら、偏屈な性格、権力闘争によって、希望の官職が得られなかったようです。そんなことも関係してか、長明の、あまりに人間的な、その揺れる心情がわりとストレートに描かれていて、どこかどうしようもなく共感してしまいます。仏教的思想は、欲望の追求こそが社会の原動力と考える欧米的な思想の対極にあるようで、どこか同じコインの表裏なのではないでしょうか？　そんなことを考えさせられました。

わたしは中高生のころ、何より古文が嫌いでしたが、こうして歳を経てから読み直してみると、教えかた、つまり教育のありかたに問題があったのではないかと思います。特に偉大でもなければ、我々と興味や関心ごとがさほど違うとも思えない人が、千年もの時空を超えて、語りかけてくるのが、古典を読むことの醍醐味ではないでしょうか？　その不思議に身をひたして、思いを好きな方向に馳せのばすことが、若いころになぜできなかったのか、などと考えてしまいました。短いので、若い人にはもちろん、古文なんて二度と読みたくない、という人にも、だまされたと思って手に取ってみたら、と勧めたくなる一冊です。

全部で150ページほどの薄い本です。しかも「方丈記」本文は40ページまで。ごくごく短い作品なのです。

最近気付いたのですが、鴨長明って頼朝、義経なんかと同時代人なんですよね。何かもう少し後の人のようなイメージを勝手に持ってました。「平家物語」の中にもこの作品を参考にした箇所があるというのに。
もっとも作中には合戦のことは全く出てきませんが。「私には関係ないよ」とこの人は思ってたのかもしれませんね。承久の乱前に亡くなっているそうなので、時代が大きく変わったことも気付いていなかったのかも。…なんて考えながら読むのも一興ではないでしょうか？

文章は有名な古典作品の中でも読みやすい方に入ると思います。前述のとおり短い作品なので、古典を原文で読むことにあまり慣れていない方にもおすすめできます。

訳文はなく、原文のみ。原文の下部に注記が施されています。
その他、底本の影印とその翻字、「平家物語」や「池亭記」などいろいろな文書から本文に関係してくる箇所の抜粋など付録が豪華ですので、学生さんなどで専門に勉強される方にも便利なのではないでしょうか。
そして市古先生の解説は鴨長明の生涯から方丈記の内容・構成まで分かりやすく、しかも細かく説明されています。

方丈記を読むならこの本をおすすめします。
