幼児に死について教えられる本がないか、いろいろ探していましたが、見つかりませんでした。いかにも大げさだったり、読み聞かせて気恥ずかしくなったり（もちろんそれも良書なのでしょうが）……。偶然、この本を見つけて「これだ！」と思いました。さりげなく、言葉すくなに、それでいて死とは何かをじんわりと伝えてくれます。見開きの絵、次の見開きは字だけ、また見開きの絵、見開きの字、という繰り返しが、まるで映画のようで、純粋さ、静謐さを感じる絵本です。

　　1938『The Dead Bird』
　しんでいたとりをこども達がとむらう絵本。
「こどもたちは　とべなくなった　とりを　かわいそうだと
　おもいました。
　でも　もりのなかに　おはかを　ほって　うめてやれる
　そう　おもいつくと　うれしくなりました。」

　こどもだった頃、はなやむしやちいさなねこをうめた記憶がよみがえり、ちいさないきものをなくしたこどものきもちがわかる気がする。
　ブラウンのむだのないことばとシャーリップのブルートーンの絵。
　センスのいい絵.本。
　こんな絵本がよみつがれていくと　いい。
