花の好きな牛、フェルジナンドは立派な闘牛になることなんて、これぽっちも考えていません。毎日、花のにおいをかいていられたら幸せなんです。そんなフェルジナンドに、あるとき闘牛として大抜擢されてしまいます。
子育てをしているお母さんにお勧めの一冊です。
自分が好きになれない若者にお勧めの一冊です。
絵はとても丁寧にかかれていて、どれもポストカードにしたいくらいです。こんなにお値打ちなんて驚きです。

落合恵子さんの小説のなかでこの絵本のことを知りました。それぞれ「好き」なことは違うし、何を「幸せ」と感じるかも違うと思う。まわりと違ったことをするのは勇気がいることだけど、フェルジナンドの姿を見てると、自分に正直に生きるのが一番幸せなんだなあと感じます。それからフェルジナンドのお母さん。いいお母さんです。

　第二次世界大戦の前、スペイン内戦のころに書かれた絵本。
　話の内容はとてもシンプルで、奇想天外な要素がない。しかし、じわじわ、と心にしみてくる。おとなにとっても、心の励みになる絵本かもしれない。
　「政治性」はあるのかもしれないが、考えてみれば、当然のことしか書いていない。「牛としての幸せ」、てなに？それは、「人間としての幸せ」にもはねかえってくる質問だ。この牛の両親は、優しい。
