大人になって初めてケストナーの作品と出会って感動しました。「子どもの頃に読んでいたら、もっといい大人になっていたかも？」なんて思いました。でもよく考えたら大人になってしまった今だからこそ、素直な良い心を持ったエーミールに感動するのかも？岩波少年文庫からは「池田香代子さん」の訳でも出ていますが、こちらの「高橋健二さん」訳とちょっと雰囲気が違います。私は、「~です。」「~ます。」調の「高橋健二さん」訳の方がこの素直な物語りにあってるいような気がして気に入っていますが、ぜひ読み比べて自分のお気に入りをみつけてみて下さい。

探偵モノが大好きだった。
今でもミステリが好きである。

思えば、探偵小説は、世の中には悪というものが存在するのだ、ということを子供心に学ばせてくれた、格好の教科書だった。

学んだことその一、人はみかけによらない。いい人だと思っていた人が意外と犯人だったりするものだ。
学んだことその二、被害にあったらどうするか？泣き寝入りはﾀﾞﾒ。頭を使え。味方をさがせ。

世の中の悪に対して、どう立ち向かっていけばいいのか、ｹｽﾄﾅｰはまっすぐに書いています。

賢く、かつ、勇敢であれ、と。

本の大きさまで大きな読後感を与えてくれるとしたら、この本がいちばんいいと思います。箱から取り出して、寝そべりながら読めば、見えてくる世界がガラリとかわり、ケストナーに導かれていい休日がすごせることまちがいありません。
読み終わったあなたは、テーブルの足を指差し、「ティッシュバイン」などとドイツ語を口走るようになるでしょう。
