何年か前に、イギリスの湖水地方を旅行した時、北の方から
いくつかの湖を巡りウインダミア湖にたどり着きました。
船着場に立って湖を見渡した時、まったく忘れていたのに
ある本の舞台の風景が浮かび上がり、目の前に広がっている
風景と完全に一致したのです。
ヤマネコ島があり、鵜の島があり、カンチュンジュンガが聳え

今、自分が立っているこの場所がリオではないか！と確信しました。
家に帰って調べてみたら、まさしく「ツバメ号とアマゾン号」の
子供たちが活躍した場所はウイダミア湖の周辺であることがわかり
感激一入でした。
すでに、このシリーズは３回も読んでしまいました。それぞれじつに
個性的な子供たちの感情や行動や会話が、さりげない表現にもかかわらず

的確に読者に伝わってきます。この本は、登場人物は子供たちですが、じつは
大人が読んで楽しむ本だと思います。自分が子供だった頃にやった遊び
秘密基地や秘密の道など、自分が多少なりとも経験したからこそ
子供たちの気持ちが良く理解できるのではないでしょうか。
最近ちょっと感受性が鈍くなってきたなーなんて感じてる方に
お薦めです。

アーサー・ランサムのこのシリーズは、子供達が冒険（といっても荒唐無稽な話ではなく等身大のもの）を経て少しづつ成長していく話でもあります。同時に、良き父親、良き母親、良き大人の物語でもあります。脇役で登場する大人達の豊かさに、子供の頃は気がついていませんでしたが。

子供はこんな夏休みを過ごしたいと思うでしょう。大人はこんな夏休みを子供にプレゼントしてあげたいと思うでしょう（もしかすると自分がこんな夏休みを過ごしたかったと思うかもしれません）。
読み終えて豊かになる、本当の意味での良い本だと思います。是非、親子で読んでください。おすすめです。

　小学校時代、アーサーランサム全集（全12巻）は繰り返し10回以上も読んだものです。少年冒険物でありながらも、荒唐無稽な「おとぎばなし」ではない。まるで自分も主人公の子供たちの仲間であるかのような存在感で、リアルに、しかもドキドキワクワクを伴って作品世界で迫ってきます。この本を子供の時に読むと、一生財産になる本だと思います。30年近くがたった今も、私のバイブルです。
